The Orville - Seth MacFarlane's Star Trek homage/comedy

I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Your own enjoyment of this new show might depend on your own love for 1990s Star Trek, and whether or not you find Seth MacFarlane funny. Fortunately for me, I'm a big fan of both and the first episode of The Orville was delightful fun. It's an homage to The Next Generation's style and storytelling, with an added comedy element (which isn't as overpowering as the trailers made it seem). The jokes were all pretty funny, too, but I'd probably have laughed more if the trailer hadn't spoiled all of them beforehand.

Mostly, it's very evident that Seth LOVED Star Trek, and he's managed to pay tribute to a lot of the things that we loved about it.

I like pretty much all of the characters, and it seems well cast - at this point we don't really know much about anyone beyond the captain, his ex-wife and his helmsman friend (I'm still learning names!), but I can see a lot of potential. There's good chemistry between MacFarlane and Palecki.

It looks great, with some lovely special effects and an attention to visual details (views through windows, engine damage) that was never seen in Star Trek, most likely because the technical capabilities and budget wouldn't really have allowed for it back then.

It's even got the fade-to-black advert breaks at dramatic moments! It feels like years since I've seen that. I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going, and I think it's got a lot of heart. Unfortunately, this is a Fox sci-fi show and I'm completely expecting it to be cancelled.

Has anyone picked this up in the UK?

I might give it a go, I really like SM's other stuff, the Star Trek episode of FG is genius

I liked it, just remember how bad the first episode of TNG was

For a comedy/parody I was waiting on the humour to kick in but it barely did.

Then again I'm another who finds Seth McFarlane to be unfunny.

Enjoyed it, & will watch the next five before Fox inevitably cancel it, but I did spend a lot of the episode wondering how they're not getting sued by the people who make Star Trek. It's basically EXACTLY that show, with a few more jokes thrown in & slightly better effects.

Yeah, pretty much the only thing he's done that hasn't clicked with me is The Cleveland Show. I thought the Ted movies and A Million Ways to Die in the West were among the best comedies of recent years.

Oops, spoke too soon: FOX UK have announced today that they've picked it up for broadcast (no date given yet).

Fox are advertising it as a comedy but I don't that is what it is supposed to be, it is more drama with some humour. Haven't watched it yet but really looking forward too doing so.

I don't think they've managed to combine adult comedy with a ST:TNG inspired drama series very well. Jokes fell flat and the rest was, at best, season 1 TNG storytelling.

I'm hoping it'll improve.

Watched it this evening and loved it, felt like a 90s episode of Star Trek if Seth MacFarlane had written the dialogue. Even had two ex Trek actors.

🤣 ain't that the truth, although apparently ratings were pretty good for it. Hopefully whoever is running fox doesn't take a instant dislike to this and realises this could be huge if allowed to find it's own feet.

Isn't the biggest issue that folks watch it? Rather than the overall quality. It's got an inbuilt fanbase with the people involved, so I can see it doing OK
