This season is a write off. The problem comes in January: do you give Jose money to fix this? If you don't then I've no idea what we're expected to watch for the next 5 months. But if you do, then you've got to back him based on teams and performances like that and I'm not sure he's justifying the support at the moment as there are problems all over the pitch.

We finished second last year. What on earth has happened in such a short time?

I don't think he ever really was the man for the job, his success is built around taking teams that are nearly all the way there and spending a fortune.

In all honesty, not sure who the team needs. Possibly the manager doesn't even exist, I'd guess someone like Pep or Klopp would tell the board they needed about £500m to get them competing again.

Gary Megson? Sam Allardyce?

Not sure it is fixable this year, I'd guess just write off the season. Maybe try and do a Chelsea in the CL?

Would a CL success be deemed a success for the season as a whole?

I guess it would a little, how could it not?

Let's not kid ourselves, we're winning zilch this season! This is the worst United side for decades and it's down to the manager. I know some of you are Mourinho fans...I'm not...but it's his job to pick the team, to build the team and to motivate the team...that team looks disjointed, lacking in any kind of coherent shape and just generally unhappy. I believe he's lost the changing room, just as he did at Chelsea and the only way things will ever improve is to part company. These players are certainly guilty of below par and bafflingly disinterested performances, but it's clear to see Mourinho does not have the ability get the best out of them and get them fired up...if you can't get fired up against Liverpool you should throw your shirt in the washbag and just **** the hell off!! The board extend his contract and then deny him the funds to improve the team so they should go to (...not bloody likely though is it).

United are in crisis, we are 19 points off the top and only 2 points from the bottom half of the table. No team fears us anymore and OT has become more of a chocolate teapot than the impenetrable fortress it used to be...shocking, shocking times and big decisions have to be made, any other of the BIG teams would have got rid by now! From a business perspective...as unpalatable as it is...it can't be doing the share price much good and the worldwide fanbase is sure to take a massive hit the longer this crap goes on.

...Happy Christmas everyone

The root cause of our problems and decline is Ed Woodward.

I don't know if its his brief, but he cares more about the social media clicks than what is happening on the pitch. In that sense we're in rude health, so I doubt he'll go anywhere, but he's been in charge throughout this downturn, appointed the last three managers, given the go ahead to sign the majority of this shower of players. This is his legacy.

Come back Gill.

The Woodward years. Brilliant.

I keep reading everywhere that there's no way United will sack Mourinho until it's mathematically impossible to qualify for the CL - the idea being that the pay off will be less. I genuinely have no idea about the sums involved, but when you can pay £90M for Pogba or £50M for Fred, is the difference between sacking him now and at the end of the season really that big? I can't imagine there will be more than £20M difference. Is it really that big a deal?

As for the game, I can understand what people on here are saying. It's uninspiring hoofball. Don't get me wrong, if that was working and getting results, then there would be no problem with that, but why keep on when it clearly isn't working and doesn't suit the players you have (Fellaini aside).

And why is Mata not playing? The one player out of your team who I'd be happy to see at City. One player who can foot his foot on the ball and pick out a pass.

Sack him now and who do you get to replace him? Is there any top manager not in work to take over? And any top manager will cost a fortune in compensation to prize away from a club.

I like the football that Red Bull Saltzberg play. Is their manager any good? I’d take the position we are in just now, if the football was good.

The problem is you actually wouldn't, you'd whinge about the results. Your expectations are just temporarily lowered.

But there really isn't a lot of point in sacking him, if you sack him now you've got a Jan transfer window you'd need to open the cheque book to a new manager, nor is there much chance of recouping any of the money already spent due to the form of the players.

I guess JM is on a sizeable contract and did sign an extension, I'd guess you'd be up for some decent money if you did, but I'd guess peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

PSG.

So looks like José might get the boot before the end of the season then.

Yep, we are out of the Champions League for at least two years now.

We lose heavily to PSG and Maureen gets the sack the next day...would be a decent result to me!

...depressing that I want my own team to lose...it's for the greater good though!

...what about Zidane, he's free isn't he?

The good old Daily Fail has PSG being the ideal draw for United representing their best chance of going through

Surely Porto would have been better?

Considering we are the weakest team in it, Porto would have been wanting us more than we would want them.

Not sure what PSG has ever done to be deemed some sort of European powerhouse you'd want to avoid. Spend a lot of money admittedly, but I'd be happier with them than most of the teams. Maybe not the ideal draw, but certainly not bad.

Same could be said for City, and they spanked us a few weeks ago!
