Cycling 2015

Spain's Alberto Contador was given a two-year ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for failing a dope test during the 2010 Tour de France.

More here.

Personally I think it should have been done long ago. What do you guys think?

Two years is far too short.

Edit - he'll be back in six months vying with David Millar as the most reformed cyclist in history.

Was he banned pending the outcome of this or has he been cycling? Because if he was I don't see how it is a two year ban really if its backdated to the date he should have been banned.

I assume he's not handing back prize money, sponsorship and wages from the period?

Wiggins came 23rd in 2010...

He finished 4th in 2009.

They're totally different situations, as Millar admits culpability in his doping whereas Contador still protests his innocence.

Well he's been stripped of the 2010 TdF and 2011 Giro d'Italia so it's more than a slap on the wrists. He also won't be able to enter the Tour this year either.

Still not the same as handing back his ill-gotten earnings.

The right decision just way way too late. Cycling as a sport does seem to be a determined self harmer.

Lance must be having a bit of a chuckle to himself after this weeks events though if they can award the Giro to someone like Scarponi I guess there's still a chance Ullrich could inherit a couple of wins yet!

Real shame when the sport is on the up in this country and more people seem to be riding generally.

Better to celebrate the achievements of Adam Blythe and Andy Fenn this week and Cav riding in his stripes.

Merckx seemed to think a big injustice had been done.

I don't know what to think.

You're assuming this verdict is the correct one. Even Andy Schleck, (who's become a TdF winner off the back of this) said "I feel sad for Alberto. I always believed in his innocence."

If he really did eat some dodgy food then he has every right to feel totally aggrieved over what's happened.

Isn't that the usual defence though?

Apparently some more tickets for the World Cup/Olympic test event next weekend are going up for sale at 10am

Doubt there will be many available, but might be worth a go. I will be trying to get tickets, certainly.

Saxobank have cancelled Contador's contract, so that's a result. He'll be back in time for the Vuelta, but the Tour is wide open now.

I can see Movistar coming in for Contador, after all they were happy to have scumbag Valverde on their books.

Indeed - good form there and held off a strong Weestra and scumbag Valverde.

Next up Milan-San Remo on Saturday.
