Nice review Matt (by way of Mike). I disagree about Moroder's score though; it's so perfectly '80s I can't imagine Scarface without it.

Thanks geoff, got to say I have a soft spot for the score as well! I'm always a sucker for a bit of 80s synth though.

I know you don't like the 7.1 remix, but the added oomph it gives to the music (score and songs both) is very nice. It spreads around the sound field in a slightly gimmicky way, yet it perfectly complements the tacky '80s vibe.

Good review thanks. Is the audio based on the 5.1 remix from the original special edition, (as far as I'm aware US only) Platinum Edition or is it new? Thanks. The 5.1 remix on the Platinum is excellent but purists will disagree.

When the blu-ray rip off period has died down, I'm so getting this. It's such a guilty pleasure.

Also, is the opening text displayed using subtitles (which look awful) or burnt in on-screen? This has caused me to always get the prior US editions. Thanks.

I believe that it's based on the Platinum remix. That one was actually mixed in 5.1 EX, so creating 7.1 from that wouldn't be a big stretch at all.

Sorry tony, couldn't tell you whether the 7.1 remix is new or not as I've never owned the Platinum DVD release (used to have the old US LE giftset of the Anniversary Edition, but sold it off a year ago), but I would expect what geoff says to be true.

As for the displayed text in film, I don't recall seeing any player-generated subs in that capacity, they were all burnt in. I can't double check for you because I had to return the BD check-disc, but I'm pretty confident that all text is burnt in (and certain that most of it is at least!).

Yeah the soundtrack sounds very good, it's really just the gunfire that grates.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure the SE remix. It's certainly a lot less in your face. Scarface is ott, this fits it imo.

The text runs right at the start and talks about Cuban's coming to America etc... Due to multi-country releases, the prior Euro dvds have all subtitled it. The American release is properly on-screen. Normally I wouldn't mind but it looks awful on the UK dvds.

I can tell you for a fact that the US version has burnt-in titles & subs. The UK disc appears to be the exact same platter, because it has the same language/audio options as the US one.

I'm pretty sure the SE 5.1 remix has no added foley.

Perfect, thanks. One of the joys of it financially making sense to reuse the us disc than master a Europe wide one.

Does the UK steelbook contain a copy of the original 1932 Scarface like the US one? Can't find any evidence that it does.

I read somewhere else that it doesn't, the US release does.

Yeah, I'm just being over-precautious really - given the length of the film - by not saying I'm absolutely certain all on-screen text is burnt in on the UK BD, I am certain all the text earlier on in the film is (including the computer screen type text that imparts the info on the cuban riots at the start).

Rubbish. Oh well, the US version can be had for around the same price as the UK one from Amazon.com so might order that instead.

I ordered the US one specifically because it comes with the 1932 Scarface on DVD. You get some art cards with it too.

I enjoyed it, depends on how much you love/hate the early Golden Age Gangster films I guess, but it's fast paced and surprisingly violent for the time so it does have a similar level of energy as De Palma's remake and the plotlines are pretty similar, but it's obviously much less operatic.

Apparently, Howard Hughes got fed up with censorship requests and decided to show the film only in those US states which had little or no censorship control, that's why it seems so violent for a 1932 movie.
