Sad news about Hargreaves. Agreed about Owen - he's a great squad player, but if you've got to name 25 then he's taking up a place that Wellbeck could have - he's got to be given a chance, or sold so he can make his way elsewhere. But you give Owen a one-on-one and he very rarely misses it. Can't say the same about Wellbeck.

I'm not sure Danny Welbeck needs to be registered next season - he's not 21 until November (so sayeth Wikipedia...) so I presume he falls within the birthday limit for next season's list. In partical terms however having him and Owen in the same sort of position in the striker order might be too much, but then again they are both injury-prone so perhaps we should be preparing to keep both and hope that if they get injured then they do it in "turns".

I'm also on the list of people that want to see Owen stay another season - he brings enough to the table and everything about his conduct seems first class. Also Chicharito has a very busy summer with Mexico, which when added to playing in the world cup last summer will surely tire even him. If he gets some extra time off then I'd expect Owen to be needed, as we'd be reliant on Rooney and Berbatov, followed by whichever of the kids are still at the club. He has a role to play I think...

I can see Welbeck being sold to Sunderland (or another Premiership club) for £10M+, bargain price for a player that is still young and has lots of potential.

2-0, Will Keane pen. Seems it's just the first team that can't get penalties at OT anymore

I'd agree on hoping Owen stays. He accepts his role and probably realises that it will be better for him in the long run. I saw an article somewhere that looked at the number of games Chicharito will play in close season and it was guaranteed to be more than Wilshere (if he'd been picked for U21 and full duty) - even if England get to the U21 final.

Assuming the rules stay the same, 1st Jan 1990 is the key date for the 2011/12 season. Welbeck's birthdate is 26 Nov 1990 (per the club website) so he'll still count as an U21 player and won't "take up" a place in the 25. Rafael and Fabio won't (9 July 1990), Macheda won't (22 Aug 1991), Bebe won't (12 July 1990).

Smalling and Obertan will no longer count as U21 players, neither will the returning Cleverley, de Laet or Diouf.

I don't think United have been too troubled by the limitations of the 25 man squad and the home grown players rule in the way that other teams have been. Van Der Sar, Neville and Hargreaves will definitely be vacating spots with Brown and Kuszczak probables to do so with Owen a possible (and possibly Macheda) too, so there will be positions to fill. That's not even considering whether Scholes retires.

At the moment, there are maybe 22 places filled though (Evra, Rio, Anderson, Berbatov, Rooney, Giggs, Smalling, Park, Chicharito, Vidic, Carrick, Nani, O'Shea, Evans, Fletcher, Valencia, Obertan, Gibson, Cleverley, Lindegaard, De Laet, Diouf), 25 if you add [say] Scholes, Owen and Brown.

Fergie has said 3 new players. One of them will obviously be a goalie. If it's De Gea he will count as an U21. I'd assume he'd look for a defender (nominally to replace Neville) and a midfielder - if Jack Rodwell is signed, he'll also count as an U21.

Without movements in the existing squad, there aren't loads of spare slots - certainly not as many as I'd thought there would be. I assume (and hope) Cleverley will get a chance this season. I can't see Diouf has a future at MU. If Obertan is retained, surely he needs to go out on loan. Surely De Laet needs to make an impact soon or get sold.

good news. he's still very young, though. i hope the pressure of premiership football/life and replacing vds doesn't affect him. we've had a few "promising" keepers come in on a wave of heavy expectation only to crash on to the rocks of harsh reality. <-- too, much?

Who else is underwhelmed by the new home kit?

New Home Kit at Kitbag

There's also unofficial pictures of a blue and black horizontal striped away kit doing the rounds which looks awful (I'll still get one though! )

Really like it myself- best kit since 07/08. Saying that, I do prefer the more simple kit design though. Loved (unfortunately) the City kit last season and this seasons was nice too.

That Blue away (if real) is a shocker though- looks like one of those 'training shirts' the official store sells. There is a black one, which apparently isn't real, which looks great.

Nah that was the current one with collars.

TheDot - I'll end up getting one - just think they could have kept it simple but better, for example they could have replicated the collar finish around the sleeves. It's bit too plain as is.

Read somewhere that the blue/black design was made especially to tempt Sneijder to sign!

Absolutely agree - I've hated that blue "hooped" shirt from when the first snap appeared and it certainly hasn't grown on me. I know of the black kit you mentioned, and it does look beautiful. Being essentially the black version of the upcoming home kit it seems an obvious fake - but it looks so good

I liked the photos of the home kit on the hanger, but oddly not so much in the player photos, which is usually the other way round. I bought this season's home kit last week only because of the golden CHAMPIONS 19 printing being done at OT, so I doubt I'll get any other replicas anytime soon. But if the black kit does turn out to be real then I'll reconsider...

Lol at Fergie trying to get a journo banned from Fridays press conference.

I bet he'll blank him now as he can't actually ban him from a uefa event.

Out of your '93 lot who hasnt had a testimonial?

Won't Varane be loaned back to a French club for experience though?

Dwight yorke commentating? what is it with Sky and their love for commentators with dull and monotonous voices?
OT sounds like the emirates when arsenal haven't scored after 20 minutes!
