Another 18 Zavvi stores close with immediate effect, including their flagship at Piccadilly. 353 further jobs go.

Jsut heard that on the news. Along with a load of job cuts at Jaguar/Land Rover.

I am suprise the Derby store is not closing really, it is right near a big HMV and really is a small store which in my eyes is very overpriced stock (probably goes for all their stores). Maybe they are locked into a contract for the property though?

Is Piccadilly the flagship? I guess it is. I was never sure if it was that one or the Oxford St/Tottenham Ct Rd one which I'm fairly certain was the original Virgin Megastore.

Piccadilly Circus store used to be Tower Records, and Virgin were across the road in the Sogo building. The rent on the old Tower building, being so iconic, must be crippling.

I bet TK Max can make it work

Prime location in Piccadilly Circus. Even though they were incredibly expensive it would be nice to see Tower back there

I'm hardly surprised to see the one in the MetroCentre going. The place looked gutted when I was in there last week. That'll leave... HMV selling CDs & DVDs in the MetroCentre now (and a meagre selection in WH Smiths) bit crap really.

"Since then, Zavvi has had difficulties in sourcing stock and has been forced to enter new trading arrangements."

Does that mean it's having to pay cash for stock?

I've probably spent too much time thinking about Zavvi, but I would've thought the record/film co's would want more than one major player on the high street. HMV's essential monopoly position will let them squeeze even more discounts from suppliers and not all of sales lost at Zavvi will be taken up by HMV/internet.

they used to get their stuff from woollies entertainment uk sub division but when that went down the pan they had no choice to go looking for other dealers who given how tight things are at the moment wouldn't give them much of a credit line i bet since that credit's insured and the inability to get insured credit was what killed woolies off (partly)

Of the remaining 94 stores, some will be bought by hmv & possibly rebranded as Fopp, or in the event of it being in a better location than a current hmv in the town, rebranded as hmv with the existing hmv rebranded Fopp. The staff would be kept on - most likely. The rest of the zavvi store will almost certainly close. Within the next fornight I'd guess.
Obviously the Administrators are trying to make the best of the situation from their point of view but I don't know why they haven't shown a little more transparancy with their store closures, to their staff at least. Even Woolies/Deloitte openly set dates for what stores would close.

How "immediate" is that?

Will/is the Piccadilly branch have an everything must go sale?

I'm suprised both of the Zavvi stores in Broadmead Bristol are still open, as they currently have two fairly large stores within a few hundred metres (one of which only opened a couple of months back!), seems strange that they're shutting so many others but keeping both of those.

New-ish stores may be on nice rent terms (maybe even rent free if it's a new shopping centre that needs well known retailers to get itself established).

Well it was confirmed this afternoon, hmv have bought 14 (of the profitable) Zavvi stores for a total of £1.3m, with a view to spending another £700k on refitting them. 269 permanent full-time staff roles will be "saved" said the administrators. Unfortunately that does not bode well for the remaining 80 branches.

"Good News" in regards to the hmv purchase of the 14 stores, a few jobs saved,it must be a massive relief for those stores rescued.

Christmas trading performance for hmv was impressive given the current climate.

I'm not sure if any new product is being shipped to Zavvi, I have a list of E&Y directors who can authorize orders at work so I assume someone may be supplying them, not me unfortunately
