Well it's a fairly epic book, about wars between houses, it's fairly slow paced. I'm not really sure it'd make a decent film, a decent length series might be better. Sort of a Game of Thrones in space.
I think it looks great, but so many of the shots just brought back to mind the 1984 version, so much so that I thought someone must have done a comparison, and indeed they have:
It prompted me to watch the 1984 version last night. Like a fine wine it gets better with every rewatch for me. A (marginally flawed) masterpiece that was cruelly maligned on release. Sad that even Lynch has disowned it.
I loved the Lynch version. I bought the book without knowing anything about it and read it before seeing the film. May have helped with some of the more obscure visualisation. And god I was a geeky 14 year old.

Think my first knowledge was the original game, then the film and then the books. I'm always unsure how such films go down with people with no knowledge of it beforehand.
Can see this being delayed until Summer 2021 at least
Villeneuve may not have made a bad film but let's face it Blade Runner 2 was pretty dull. I wonder will there be anything in his Dune as memorable as "a Secret Report within the Guild"?

I've sat down to watch his Blade Runner a few times now and the first 30 minutes or so puts me to sleep. Even with the first fight scene, there's something about the visuals and the soundtrack which seem to get me every time.
To be fair, the original Blade Runner was the same...

How does this not make it a bad film? I think it was yet others seem to love it, yes it looked beautiful but had about 30 mins of decent story content spread over a couple of hours
Having watched BR 2049 I can honestly say that I remember nothing about it, no quotable lines of dialogue no action scenes that stuck out. It looked pretty that's about it.
I remember more from the original game than 2049 and I only played it through once
The likes of BR2049, and hopefully Dune, are vitally important films IMO. Cinema's rapidly changing in favour of mass-appeal and large profits, and that's not necessarily a good thing.
You can't beat a film that's helmed by a person passionate about the material, and is mostly left alone by the studio to do their job. Those films are few and far between, and it's ok that they're divisive. To me that's just indicitive of a strong direction, rather than a safe middle ground. Variety is the spice of life, and all that, and we all don't have to like everything.

I'd say doesn't have to be binary - either good or bad. Dull seems to sum it up to me. I would be happy to watch Blade Runner maybe 10 times more in my life - I'll probably not watch BR2049 again.
Yeah the fact he did Arrival fills me with hope, a superb intelligent SF film, Blade Runner 2049 however fills me with dread, a mostly vacuous movei. One of my friends says he thinks its better than the original. Heresy! The original had so much depth the remake so little.
I really liked BR2049. Not as good as the original but definitely interesting. In fact it's his handling of that film that makes me optimistic about Dune.
Not a lot happened in BR2049. Just lots of hope, dashed at the end. Dune I think could be good, though at the moment it does just look like the Lynch version remade.

I think the remake idea is because there is literally not a single shot in the trailer that isn't a new version of a shot from the old film. Even large aspects of the design look borrowed from the Lynch version (the stillsuits look incredibly similar). There was a lot of stuff in the book that never made it to the screen in the Lynch movie but there aren't any shots like that in the trailer, which doesn't mean they won't be there but fuels the remake talk.
Honestly I think because Dune is now something of a cult classic Villeneuve is trying to tap into the existing fanbase to be a large part of his core audience. He did exactly the same thing with BR2049, with limited success.
