Yes think so. I get the letter but by the time I have done the checks -charity amounts, is interest under £1000/£500, what’s my other Income, is that under £1000? I may as well just complete the online form!

Yes that sounds right, it costs them money to process the SA returns so they're always trying not to and I guess many people won't be bothered to dig through receipts and ask for £50 of gift relief if they haven't got a form to hand.

I can't do premium bonds (ex-pat and being in the US makes it illegal for me to officially invest in premium bonds apparently as it is seen as gambling (even though cannot lose money) or ISA, so I am stuck deciding what to do. I have money in UK still that is currently earning 0%. No pension either as an option as not enough UK income to make it worthwhile. Stock market is an option for sure (direct investment), but risky and needs some management (or to pay someone to manage it).
Property prices are still just a little too high for me to buy another property in cash, so kind of stuck. Anyone have any (serious) ideas what I could do there?

Is paying off your mortgage still the thing to do in this day and age when the opportunity arises? Think I'm down to about £70k now.

There's been a few interesting bond issues recently - Freddies Flowers (twice I mentioned them this week) did one and raised 3m. They were paying 5%+

Maybe. Need to get a good online broker I can sign up for. I have quite a few ETFs in the US, but have to be careful as I do have some FTSE and UK based ones too via one of my US brokerages so do not want crazy tax situations there with any wash sales etc.
I have no mortgage so that is not an option for me to pay off.

It probably depends on what interest rate you're on.
We were on something like 2.39% fixed for another 7 years ( don't ask ) so it made sense in our case.
It was always drummed into me, by my parents, that you pay debts off first before saving

Depends on your mortgage rate and whether you might need the money.
What about some shares if you've money lying about? I'd have thought amazon will keep climbing for ever

Haha.
If you have modest savings though it’s not a bad place to put it!

I need to move my Santander 123 since the rate plunged (was 3% once, now 0.6%!!)
But everything sucks!

Yeah, the 123 is still one of the better options, despite it being a lot worse than it was. Shame they chose to keep the account fee.

We switched to the 123 Lite account and moved most of our excess money into Marcus (even if that's also less attractive now).

I think I just about get enough cash back to cover the fees.
And I also have 123 credit card. So doesn’t seem worth switching and moving to lite.
But I should probably move hskf out and put more into my rate setter isa, that’s still paying 2-3% right now (which is 50% discount from normal rate)

You might already be aware but getting money out of your RateSetter ISA might be tricky - I'm still waiting for money to be released that I requested in April. I'm hopeful I'll get it by next April...

Yeo true my other half tried to withdraw a load in March and took 2 months.
I would also be up to the fsa limits anyway which I think apply? But maybe not!
Oh well, stick with Santander then!

This is quite a bit more than that though, not worth that hassle
The key for me is that I can open as an ex-pat. I am still a UK Citizen though so still have a NI number and even a UK address.
