Certainly impressive. People say you can't compare him to Fangio etc. but in my opinion you can as in those days people would win races by several minutes whereas now the gulf between pole can literally be tenths or even hundredths so to still be at the top against such close competition shows his worthiness.

The impressive thing with Fangio was that he survived to get his records!

Comparisons between eras are pretty meaningless.

If someone racked up more poles when there were less races per season, that implies dominance and longevity, but Hamilton has been doing this for 12 years, so he definitely matches the latter.

The danger of death is always there when you're doing over 200mph, but yes, likelihood of death in the last 20 years is almost 0.

It is impossible to compare different period accurately, different circuits, different cars. I would expect in the old days the competence of the drivers probably varied massively as how many people had access to any kind of racing in the 50s to get any kind of practice in as a youngster.

I don't like having to agree with you...but you beat me into it.

Just don't get a big head, I'll still find something else to disagree with you about!

Maybe the forums should do a virtual drinking session? Would be nice to actually speak to forumites properly rather than only by text.

The F1 2020 Thread

Remember in the 50s Teams were even more single minded than now. If Fangio’s car was sick they’d kick a teammate out of their car and stick him in it

I won't, it's probably the only F1 issue we agree on anyway.

For example, I don't think you can say Hamilton is any better than any of his current peers, aside from Bottas.

The same is true of Schumacher, etc etc

We effectively still had that in the late 90s with the spare car, although not quite as brutal as hooking someone out of their car.

Thanks for the link, I'd forgotten he's started doing these.

Ridiculous that Sky don't broadcast them on the channel in favour of repeating their filler content for the millionth time.

Terrible crash, Croft has mentioned it was Grosjean. Big fire and no replays.

Hope everyone's ok

That fire looks horrendous, heavy fuel and unsurprisingly offcamera
