After reflection and discussing it with my mate who also watched it tonight, I'm changing my review to a load of old *****.

So many daft unexplained things happening and nonsense being talked by characters. So much so that any close inspection about what went on, and the entire plot just seems ridiculous. From daft descriptions about flying and broadcasts touching everyone, to the bizarre unexplained Quantum Leap subplot and baddies coming over from the film Cats. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The more you think back the more nonsense just pours out of it.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

I didn't think it was dreadful but it's certainly a C-Tier superhero offering. Like a Black Panther or a Thor. In fact I found it comparable to the Helen Slater Supergirl film, in terms of silly plot contrivances and sub-standard cheesy acting. I guess I'm in the minority who thinks Gadot is an entirely charmless screen presence.

Making it two and a half hours long just so we can see a bedraggled and strangely orange Chris Pine do the fish out of water thing for far too long is a bizarre decision. There's a ridiculous amount of padding in this thing, which suggests a lot of yes women who didn't want to rein the director in.

The whole 1984 gimmick is thrown away too, with nothing that happens really being relevant to the 80s other than the brief 20 minutes or so of nostalgia porn that they cram in early doors.
Given the title, I was expecting it to go hyper 80s, with loads of bright neon colours and era appropriate music. But its aesthetic is super bland, much to its detriment.

The action is decent at times (the final fight is much better realised than the awful Black Panther version) but in the smaller battles why does Wonder Woman constantly feel like she's wearing Heelys? Sliding around all over the place in a weightless and unconvincing manner. I couldn't decide if it was an intentional nod to the janky feel of the TV show or just really badly directed.

Anyway, I didn't hate it and think there's possibly a decent 90 minute film buried in there, but it's a massive disappointment overall.

I don't think any amount of editing could save all the daft and incomprehensible plot stuff. It'd still be rubbish.

I like Gal Gadot in this. She's so elegant.

Film was average.

She doesn't have any personality though, not enough to carry a film as the lead. She's fine as a supporting character in the Fast films for instance.

The first film was fine but this ... is utter tosh with far too many plot holes ( which is usually the case when the plot is as badly written as this was )

Wow what a complete waste of a sequel. Quite liked the first one, or at least it was one of the better DC movies. The whole wish storyline was as Babs quite rightly put it lame.

Awful CGI and use of green screen. IMAX scenes might as well not be there.

oh dear from quite a few reviews, saying how its not as good as the first one (patty jenkins said in an interview recently it was the studio that forced to have the cgi fight at the end) the 2nd one is quite messy and all over the place. Didn't it have lots of rewrites and reshoots?

That was the least of the film's problems. It was awful way before the fight scene.

It was Superman 3 bad this one. Made no sense whatsoever.

I can’t think of a single thing that was good bar the 80s feel which let’s be honest has been done to death the last few years.

Old Pedro chewing the scenery was Lex Luther bad.

I’d love to know how much more of the story they shot and edited out, first cut was probably 6 hours.

Seems to be the way of DC films, Directors disowning them due to meddling and when the reviews aren't great. Maybe we will see a new directors cut on HBO Max or something but it probably fundamentally cannot save the film.

I know it is fun to slag off execs meddling, but how many would genuinely think, "this film was excellent, now lets re-edit it to make it rubbish"

I don't say this lightly, but I'd venture it's Superman IV bad.

Enjoyed most of it & thought the leads were all good, but as other have said, it was a mess.

Did I miss something, or at the end

One wonders (sorry) if they had a perfectly solid film ready for release in 2019, then spent the 12 months it was delayed playing with it & ruining it.

Why would they do that?

I think this Snyder cut of Justice League will be interesting, will it actually be a good film?

Well obviously I don't mean they ruined it on purpose, but sometimes people just tinker with things too much & the end result isn't as good as it was when they started (coughGeorgeLucascough).

I've read interviews with Patty Jenkins saying she was going to go back in & 'fix' some things with the extra time she had been given. I'm just wondering if the original cut due for release 12 months ago wasn't such a bloated mess.

Interesting? Yes. Good? Unlikely, unless he's rewritten the entire story, got a new badguy & recast half the actors. But theres another thread somewhere for that discussion.
