Oh and Howdy Folks, it's been a while!

Maybe we should make this the theme. Are there any suggestions for political or government horror if there is such a thing?

The director would have you believe that A Serbian Film is a political allegory. So fill your boots!

First night watch was one off Amazon prime as i realised I havent got my old mutliregion dvd player set up and of course the films i was going to watch are region coded.
So i watched......

Cannibals and Carpet fitters (2017)

Trailer...

Big surprise this one was actually good fun. Nice gory practical effects. Quite a few chuckles as well.

Happy Death Day (2017)
Jessica Rothe's birthday goes rapidly downhill from the point of waking up with a hangover in a stranger's (Israel Broussard) bed. Boy trouble, sorority trouble and family trouble is in plentiful supply, capped off with her murder by a psycho in a creepy baby mask (the face remarkably similar to a **** I used to work with! ) at the end of a crappy day. But that's not the end of her troubles because she's stuck in a time loop destined to repeat the day (and death) over and over again. This Groundhog day slasher is a fun concept entertainingly done. It remains a tad PG, never delving into the overtly twisted black comedy of something like a Final Destination, but it's an enjoyable 90 minutes nonetheless.

I really liked Happy Death Day (and it's sequel), I keep an eye out for stuff featuring Jessica Rothe now as she made an impression.

Nah you're getting too specific, I'd stick with straight up end of the world classics like Night Of The Comet or even the deliciously depressing Miracle Mile, will there be chaos and f00king in the streets come Oct 31st? We can only hope.

In the meantime I kicked off Horror Month last night with....

#1 - Crawl (2019)
Kaya Scodelario and her dopey dad Barry Pepper get caught in a crawlspace under their house with big ass gators during a hurricane. Now this was fun. Just different enough from the usual trapped by a shark fare that it felt fresh while also providing the much needed munch factor of limbs getting chewed on by something with far too many teeth. Short, lots of action and some hairy original set pieces, including one involving a bathroom shower that got ruined for me because they kept showing it on BBC bloody news film reviews. Recommended.

Oh and there's a cute dog in this, for anyone that can't stand the suspense there's a website for you: https://www.doesthedogdie.com/media/18747

#2 - Satanic Panic (2019)
Pizza delivery girl gets caught up in rich folks satanic ritual. Wasn't expecting too much from this horror comedy (directed by someone called Chelsea Stardust) but it turned out to be really goddamn charming with it's Fangoria produced practical gore effects and tongue in cheek performances from the likes of Rebecca Romjin as the rich bitch witch cult leader casually eviscerating dudes and then licking her fingers plus Jerry O'Connell as her rapey husband. I was won over despite it's low budget feel and ropey supporting cast. Recommended.

P.S. Hey Weasel, Happy Death Day's Ruby Modine is in this too

Braindead 2016 US tv series. There must be others where those in charge have been compromised, whether body snatchers or not. The old TV series V is another example. Can't think of any horror films at the moment though

Not seen it yet, but the recent Arrow announcement of this on Blu popped it on my radar.

Wife and I were arguing on Ruby's family resemblance to her dad. She says it's obvious but I don't see it at all.

#1 - Ready or Not -Bride meets family in a gorefest that reminded me of You're Next.
. A good start.

#2 - Transylvania 65000 - showed up on Amazon when I was looking for something to watch. Tries to be Mel Brooks and fails, but my Geena Davis was striking.

I really enjoyed Happy Death Day as I went in with low expectations, and the second one is barking.

I've managed the first couple of films on my list for this year

#1
Revenge (2017)

Young woman spends a few days wuith her boyfriend which starts to go wrong when his buddies arrive and he heads off for a few hours.

This one seemed very much a by the books revenge film, some lovely cinematography, some bits that genuinely made me cringe/feel slightly sick, and reasonable acting.
Overall I’d say it was average, not a waste of time but nothing special.

#2
The Hive (2014)

A low budget summer camp becomes the venue for a low budget horror when an aircraft crashes and two irresponsible camp councillors open a briefcase containing some very poorly packaged hazardous materials but are interrupted by the pilot who has been having a really bad day.

This is a low budget take on the zombie/viral epidemic genre mixing it up with a little Event Horizon, it's not bad but it's got a very definite Sy-fi channel movie of the week feel, and in places the way it's filmed reminds me of a videogame like Deadspace

Next 3 on the list are some older school classics.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
Having learned to be a better human and successfully navigating her death day, Jessica finds herself back where she started when her boyfriend's roommate accidentally ***** up his science experiment. However, the wrinkle this time is parallel dimensions, which shakes things up a tad. Not as focused as the first film (there are several plot threads that go unexplained or are just left hanging) but it's equally fun. The cast is expanded with the introduction of the science nerd Scooby gang and the film namechecks and channels Back to the Future. The highlight is a wonderful montage of increasingly creative suicides.

Nick Sims: Oh, really? How can a rock be dumb? They don't even have brains.
[Danielle slaps him again]

I'm with you mate, she looks decidedly hispanic to me.

#3 - Child's Play (2019)
The deadly doll's back! Having heard bad things about this reboot from reviewers and friends alike I was ready to dislike it but, know what, it's surprisingly good. It's funny (lots of in-jokes), nasty, Mark Hamill's doing his best Joker as Chucky and Aubrey Plaza's always value for money. The kids go a bit Stranger Things at the end but in a good way. This plays like an extended episode of Black Mirror (technology goes wrong and the like) it really shouldn't be connected to the old supernaturally motivated Child's Play flicks at all. Hey, I wasn't bored. Give it a go!

Quote:
Chucky: What's my name?
Andy Barclay: Han Solo.
Chucky: Did you say Chucky?
Andy Barclay: What? No. Not even close.
Chucky: Chucky.
[pauses]
Chucky: I like that name... Chucky
Also watched the first episode of this years American Horror Story 1984 which appears to have been grown in a lab, genetically modified and primed specifically for a surgical strike on my testicles; summer camp, slasher, 80's, lycra, big hair, slutty counselors, etc. I'm in!

Got through my first three seasonal offerings and all have already been covered here, so I'll be brief...

Child's Play (2019)
A reimagining of the 1980s classic but with the murderous doll being set loose by rogue code in its AI rather than a demonic Brad Dourif.

I don't think I ever got on board with the new doll design but the nastiness of the kills was on point, and the characters were mostly likeable. There weren't very many murders really but I think that reflects the original's relatively sparse bodycount.

Happy Death Day (2017)
Passed the time ok but not really a horror film. It's more of a murder mystery with Groundhog Day trappings.

Midsommar (2019)
Very much feels like it comes from the Hereditary extended cinematic universe, with its cast of matter-of-fact cultists cheerfully carrying out their sadism. It was much too long but generally held my attention with its creeping dread.

Some very memorable imagery (although also some noticeable CGI that took me out of the film's naturalistic vibe) and some horrific acts carried out, both against others and also self-inflicted.

Not a patch on Hereditary but a solid effort.

Got Midsommar on my list but it's the arse-numbingly long Director's Cut (just under 3 hrs) so I need to be properly "prepared" for that one

Well I got a duff one tonight....

#4 - Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
The Conjuring universe continues with it's 7th entry and it's yet another outing for the Lady Gaga doll. This time it's the 1960's and spookhunters the Warrens have taken possession of the pasty puppet, locking it in their trophy room amongst various other spooky artefacts. They then promply bugger off (to make Conjuring 3?) leaving their daughter and her babysitter to definitely not open that glass case that says "Do Not Open" on it

This was some pretty basic stuff, lots of loooong walks down dark corridors, what's that behind you? Oh it's another possible spin-off spook. Seriously, this plays out like a trailer for a bunch of movies they want to make; a hellhound/werewolf from Essex, a weeping killer bride, a sad samurai(?!), a haunted TV set, The Ferryman, a dodgy board game (Feeley Meeley), etc. This depressed me no end, cos I know I'll end up watching every....single....one

Skip it - unless, like me, you just can't help yourself.
