Having said that, the hire car episode was good. And it's impressive after 18 years that the writers and producers are still coming up with new ideas.
I'm not sure. Jeremy did the hire car segment in a slightly different way (the fastest car in the world). So it's not entirely new. Neither was the 24 hours in a car, which James and Richard did in a Smart.
I really really liked the last series. But this one seems way more childish and, I dunno, mean spirited in places.
Episode last night was absolutely diabolical in my opinion; by far the worst episode that I can remember. The hire car went on far too long and was too silly for me and the test of the estate/SUV was just rubbish - doing tests that are not really suited to the cars, you don't buy an Estate to go fast!

I don't recall that hire/fastest car episode with JC. Agree with you about mean-spirited as well as childish. Even Freddie has joined Paddy in mocking Chris all the time. Shame

JC raced a Toyota Auris (IIRC) against James in a Yacht. Needless to say it was in a bit of a state. But a good piece as I recall.
I dunno, the other three were always cocking about. But there was love between them. I started to lose interest a bit last week when Freddie rammed Chris very very hard. Maybe that was just me, but felt a bit more than it should be.
I will say that all three are ballsy. Hugely so. But there is an undercurrent I am just not keen on.

I said the same thing when they first started The constant digs at Chris seem to go a bit far. I know Clarkson and Hammond teased James May but it seemed a friendlier banter.

With the old Top Gear the banter seemed a bit more natural. Like you would to your mates.
With these newer versions it seems a lot more forced, like someone is only there and dressed so they can make fun of their shoes.
The show's not perfect, but it still does some fantastic sections, and on the whole I find the three of them to have settled into a nice groove. You just have to take the rough with the smooth.
Back then you wanted to be out of the car ASAP as they had a knack of exploding
The stats about driver survival rates were quite sobering. I used to know someone who drove F1 cars/ran a team in the early 60’s and he always had some great stories of that era too.
Anyone follow Johnny Smith's youtube channel. It's great. He has a very good style and quality content. Recommend his episode on a 2800 horsepower Aston Martin dragster..
.. anyhoo... He's got a long chat with Chris Harris which is interesting.
