Dirt 5 has the usual mix of off-road disciplines and this time ice racing. I have fond memories of Rallisport Challenge and getting good times on the ice races. Well, so far my first impressions of Dirt 5 are mixed. Yes it is great to have a new Dirt game and it couldn’t be more different from the Dirt Rally series.
Codemasters have doubled down on the arcade, accessible side of racing, extending this into the plethora of unlockable stickers and backgrounds to customise/personalise your player card. It’s all very colourful and the podcast thing they use in the game is enjoyable enough to listen to. But does this still feel like the Dirt games of old.
On the track I’ve found some events to be very enjoyable while others to be really frustrating . There was one at Lion Head (Africa) I think it was called where the last 25% of the course always seemed to trip me up. Made more difficult by the abruptly changing lighting conditions. The event starts in bright sunshine but it is night-time when you reach a section near the end that seems custom designed to mess up your run. The lighting changes aren’t just abrupt they happen incrementally and suddenly which really takes you out of the experience.
But there are other issues which I’m not that pleased about either. It is customary for racing gamers to expect starting from the back of the field but the way the courses are often packed with drivers in front of you makes it more about getting a decent position after the first corner or two, often by having little choice but to push your way through the pack. Crash and the reset takes a while and by the time you speed up again you might as well restart because there is little chance of winning at that point. The driving AI has some issues as well: whether it is on mud, snow or ice you’ll regularly see AI cars going round on a perfect driving line one after the other like a long train of cars - completely unrealistic.
Most disappointingly is the performance. There are two performance modes and in one of them the preview movies stutter like a slide show. In the other the gameplay has worse tearing than a PS2 era game.
I often found myself restarting stages far too often because I just wasn’t happy that the game hadn’t given me a fair chance of winning. Other times I did really well without issue. So there does seem to be inconsistency and whether it is down to event types, specific tracks or vehicle choices only more time with the game will tell.
Anyone know how I can check to see what 360 games I own on my Xbox account/gamertag? Didn't have a Xbox One and tempted by a Series, but fancied seeing what games I had bought from the store on the 360.
All the pertinent Xbox web pages (download history, purchase history etc) all redirect to a page telling me to install the Xbox app. Once I log into the Xbox app, I can't see any history or list of games I own. The library section just asks me to add a console : surely I don't need to dig my 360 out the cupboard and set it back up again?
Also if I got a Series with gamespass, would that reactivate my games with gold subscription and allow me to download all those games I "owned" on the 360?

Played a bit more of Dirt 5 after a second big patch, still optimisation issues and leaderboards are gone for me - I don’t just mean reset, the option to view them at the end of a stage has gone. Possible it was a glitch or they are still accessible somewhere else.
Other thing is, whereas the kitchen sink philosophy of throwing in as much stuff as possible might work for some types of games here it adds significant issues. There are some types of events which are needlessly frustrating for the sake of it. Sure you could get through them by mastering a really stupidly hard vehicle to control or painstakingly learning a rough terrain course. But you will probably never want to return to that event again.
That isn’t to say Dirt 5 is bad, far from it; and there is a lot of content here and you are bound to find the event types that are right for you. But there are some bloody awful ones as well. After a dozen attempts at going left round an small oval track in a vehicle so stupid looking and hard to control you literally have to make your driving choices about 5 seconds before you see any impact, I gave up with that one. Seriously, did anybody who was play testing this at any time think this was even approaching fun. Yet the reviews seem full of praise so I’ll keep going back to it and make some progress. Funny thing is, it makes me want to play the older Dirt games instead.
Edit: Leaderboards are on event select screen but sure they used to be on event results screen as well.

My MS order is currently in limbo. I noticed a pending deduction from MS on my card last Tuesday which then mysteriously disappeared on Friday morning. I called MS & they said not to worry it was just a test to see if my card was valid. Ten minutes after the call, I got an email to say they had issues with my card & that I had to switch to an alternative way of paying to avoid having my order cancelled. This is a card that I constantly use with zero issues?!? ... I switched to using the PayPal option (which links to the same valid card) & now there is a pending deduction again from MS on that, that hasn’t moved since yesterday. WTF?!?

I just checked offhand as I’d made a guess at 100 miles and apparently I am actually 99 miles from Daventry where it is, not a bad guess even if I do say so myself.
talking of dirt 5, it looks like 2K might buy codemasters F1-2k21 with loot boxes and virtual casinos with pay to win mechanics (same with dirt games)
No interest in series x this year, far too much to play on this gen (also got a new gfx card for my pc - the old one died so needed to get a new one) should be fine to play The medium as they is coming to gamepass

I was about to add another year to my EA Play sub before the switch over on the 10th but when I check my subscriptions under EA Play I see ... "Last charge £19.99 on 1/22/2020. Subscription converted to XBox Game Pass Ultimate"
Does that mean it has already been converted so there is no point getting another EA Play subscription ?

Yeah my remaining EA subscription was converted into an extra 3 months of GamePass.
Just called MS again regarding my Series X order, which still remains in the pre-order stage & the unhelpful operator basically told me it’s a lottery & if I didn’t receive a dispatch email yesterday, then I won’t be receiving it tomorrow for launch day as it takes minimum two days from receiving email before you get it...

Mine is dispatched, but I also have no details from UPS. I assume they've not collected it yet, so perhaps unlikely to be delivered tomorrow.
I never got that, a lot of people have received no notifications at all, we are all supposed to received tracking info by 8pm tonight.
That's me a few minutes ago now received the tracking number. The previous Argos text on mine just mentioned you'd get the tracking info 'this evening'.
