I would guess you press the pad button and then can adjust the volume of the game, then the person button to adjust the volume of the chat. and thats it!

I'm not sure anyone shipped a patch knowing beforehand that it was going to brick consoles.
In this instance, I'm guessing they found a bug, developed a fix and are now testing the patch.
