What's your content, douglasb - blog/magazine/portfolio/shop ? Free or paid theme ? And how much do you want to tinker ?

One way is to look at what's popular and well-rated, either at WP itself or the likes of ThemeForest.

Here's 3 recent free themes I've spotted, that are different from the usual -

MiniMable

BigFoot

MeetGavernWP

How's that ?

My advice is to look at the range selected by wordpress for the sites they host at wordpress.com - it gives you a good snapshot of available themes and how they look. If you're hosted at wordpress.com then you can try a lot of them quickly for free, and even if you're not, you can install them, preview them, click about, then cancel if you don't like.

Just a personal blog, so don't need nothing fancy.

I quite like something like this:

http://demo.iceable.com/boldr/

... but is it going to overwhelm me with features? Essentially, all I'm looking to do is re-skin the bog-standard theme I've got at the moment.

Well that's an easy one - just try the free version - boldr-lite and see how you get on. You may well find that it offers all that you need. It's very easy to swap & change themes, especially if you don't do much customisation.

It all depends on how happy you are with the default settings - as you're not needing to brand it to an existing business style, then I think you'll be fine with it out of the box. Then you can just tweak things as you go along.

Looks like it comes with a layout builder to customise your pages (although possibly limited to the paid version) for when you get more adventurous.

EDIT
I see they are affiliated to Site 5 who are a web host with an excellent range of free themes.

Thanks - took the plunge and it's looking pretty snazzy! My social media buttons aren't showing correctly but I'll have a fiddle later or swap plug-ins if necessary.

It's quite addictive when you get going. I recently did two sites for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. They've both grown hugely but kept my interest. I'm actually trying to think of something to do for another one..

Has everyone updated to 3.8 ?

The WP dashboard now looks much slicker, and seems a bit faster too (my imagination ?) - certainly a nicer UI and more satisfying to use. The widget area is supposed to be much improved too (but I don't use it much) along with the theme selection/preview options (again, little use from me).

I was just about to, doing some tidying and deleted slide deck2 lite plugin, as I have the paid version, but I've broken the site, now I've got to learn how to unbreak it

www.baypromoteam.co.uk throws up Fatal error: Access to undeclared static property: SlideDeckPlugin::$namespace in /home/baypromo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/slidedeck2-professional/slidedeck2-tier20.php on line 52

No luck via the admin page too, same error. I'm now having a swift learning curve in how to use cpanel to get in the back end and sort out, this wasn't my plan for Saturday morning!

My hosting deal with iPage will be finally coming to the end after a nightmare time with them and now looking for a UK based host for my site(s). Are Vidahost still the best UK based host for Wordpress based sites, I've checked some sites that are hosted by the big boys and they really do struggle with Wordpress and load times?

I'd always recommend vidahost. Not sure about load times as my site is pretty basic, but vidahost host these forums if that helps.

Another vote for Vidahosts. I've got a lot of sites with them , never a problem with slowness and the tech support is great should anything crop up.

Vidahost are who I use and have always been excellent!

Has anyone had any experience with multiple languages and translations of their WordPress websites?

I'm currently working on one for a translator and they would like it to have the option to select a French and German translation of the website... I'm not sure if it will be the full site or just a few pages.

They would like a drop-down menu option, rather than different flag icons at the top of the screen but I'm not sure if I have to build three websites (English, French and German) and link them via that menu.

The content doesn't actually need to be translated, as it will be supplied in the different languages, but I'm not sure how to make it work and to have the menu options change, etc.

Also, there might be a blog, which I'm assuming will just be in English, rather than having to post it in all of the different languages.

Cheers,

Psycho

Looks like they're the one I'm gonna go for then if its well recommended. Has anyone tried using the discount code they have on their site with the affiliate link, does the affiliate link still go through or does the voucher code override it?

There should be a discount code for the digital fix, not sure what it is at the moment though.
Edit: DIGITALFIX should get you 10% off and help the forums.

@Psycho do you want something like this site:

www.midbass.com

I know you don't want flags at the bottom , but that sort of thing?

It's what I am working on now and so far it's pretty easy. I can help you with some pointers if you like.

Something like that could be perfect, if I can add the links you have at the bottom to a dropdown main menu.

Are you using a plugin or have to just set it up yourself?

It doesn't need to show the Blog section of the website in multiple languages, unless that is easy to set up? Their main interested where the About Us and a few static pages.

Cheers!

Sorry for the delay, been very busy with work.

I would suggest purchasing this:

http://wpml.org/

Its about £18.00 and will do everything you want and it makes it damn simple as well.

You are still going to have to get the translation done by someone to be 100% correct but it makes the pages themselves very easy to manipulate as well as giving you full control over how many languages you want (I think it defaults to 40).
Well worth the money IMHO.

@Psycho - how are you getting on with your multi-language site ? Looks like I might be starting my first one soon - good list of links here, as some of the plugins don't have such obvious names -

Best WordPress Plugin To Make Your Site Multilingual

From a quick google, looks like qTranslate is the free plugin that gets compared to WPML, but sounds like the author is busy and there could be WP3.8 compatibility issues. So after that, Polylang is highly rated, has great reviews and appears to be well supported.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

It ended up that rather than having the option to select multiple languages, it was easier to just have the different translations on the same pages.

They wanted it to be a very clean and basic website. Nothing fancy, so that worked better for them.

I'm hoping to go live with it within the next couple of weeks. Then I'll post a link to show you how it came out.

I'm happy with it and it really works well with the brand design I came up with for some printed material they will be using in a marketing campaign. Everything matches and is visually connected.
