A good mix this weekend

Zombie Apocolypse - Ving Rhames descent into obscurity continues apace with this straight to DVD ultra low budget zombie flick. Some good ideas though, different zombie types and a zombie tiger Appauling CGI throughout but still quite entertaining 7/10

Snow White and the Hunstman - Really enjoyed this. The dwarves stole the show though. If they ever re do Time Bandits then they need that set of actors. The leads were good, not sure why all the hate for Kirsten Stewart in the big thread. 8/10

The Artist - Brilliant film 10/10

Terminator (BR) I hadn't seen this since I bought the DVD, which must be around 5-10 years ago, but I think it has aged well and can still hold its head up when in the company of more recent sci-fi films.

Cosmopolis (BR) Didn't like this. I found the dialogue to be mostly tedious, over-stylised waffle. I can understand how it could work as a book (or even a play), but as a film it is worthless.Disappointing.

Rosewood Lane (BR) I saw this earlier in the year at a Film Festival in Hamburg and I think it stands up quite well. A radio presenter moves back to her childhood home following the death of her father (who was a physically abusive drunk) and is terrorised by the local paperboy. A pretty solid thriller/horror.

Hara-kiri. A Miike misfire - remake of a samurai classic that is just plain dull.

A Royal Affair. Sumptuous Danish period drama, looking gorgeous and superbly acted by all three leads. Luckily not in English, or we'd have probably had Skeletor Knightley and Her Performing Chin.

Diamonds Are Forever. Quite some time since I saw this, and was disappointed to note that it really isn't very good at all. Connery, only 4 years after his last one, looks at least 10 years too old. Blofeld not nearly menacing enough. No memorable action. Slightly annoying and unappealing bint. Forgettable all round really, and looking especially cack after OHMSS.

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift - better & funnier than the last couple. The Scrat stuff cracked me up, especially the first 5 minutes. The look/design of the bad guy was quite scary & disturbing IMO for a kids film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - Tobe Hooper's quite hilarious sequel. Dennis Hopper looked bored for most of it, & the guy playing Leatherface had very little menace to him. Enjoyed it more than the original though (which isn't saying much from me) & the leading lady was very attractive!

House of the Long Shadows - Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee & john Carradine - together at last! Good fun. Dark transfer on the dvd though.

Skyfall: Liked it overall, despite the unusual, more personal second half. For the first time I could accept Daniel Craig as James Bond and the final twist - or perhaps I should say loop - to the Bond story arc was interesting. 7/10

Argo: Excellent throughout, well acted by all concerned. I initially had felt that the Arkin/Goodman Hollywood double act was slightly overdone but have come to accept it. The climax was nerve-racking. 8/10

The Manchurian Candidate (2004): Though I liked it, the film came across as a mixed bag compared with the 1962 original. The plot of the 2004 film is more convincing but it lacks the psychological impact of the original. 7/10

The Small Back Room (Criterion): Excellent if little known Powell & Pressburger work - surprisingly funny, superb surreal sequence and atmospheric, German modernist influenced cinematography by Christopher Challis. There's also a fascinating interview with him on the disk.

Thor (BD rental): Nicely entertaining and good to see a lot of the effects were real rather than CGI.

Dr No (BD): Superb PQ but the sound was oddly variable - music and effects too loud compared to the dialog and sometimes the dialog was too quiet (eg., when they are greeted by the "sisters"). Still very entertaining especially when you look at it as the start of a long series. Some plot points were so bizarre it makes Austin Powers look sensible

Astronaut’s Wife – Good performance from Depp and Theron without which this would have been soulless. Nice ending. 6.5/10

Inner Space – Classic fun from start to finish. 8/10

The Illusionist – Only just got round to seeing this after being overshadowed by the Prestige (and rightly so). Not bad. Worth a watch. 6.5/10

Cowboys & Zombies - or rather cowboy and zombies since their budget didnt reach to having more than 1. Cheap and cheerful horror channel nonsence 6/10

Blade Runner - Watched the original version with voice over and still liked it a lot. The final cut is the best for me but im not offended by the original at all. Fits in with a very film noir sam spade type style. 9/10

Conan the Barbarian (modern) - Well its not fit to sniff the sandle straps of the Arnie version but it was still good fun. 7/10

Texas Killing Fields - never heard of this. good movie, Even Sam Worthington is good, but Stephen Graham steals the show, no surprises there.

Breaking Dawn Pt 1. – The series is truly awful but this one is ****** up enough to be mildly interesting. 3/10

Storage 24 (Cinema) - this was shown instead of Night of Nightmares (which failed to arrive on time for the festival screening) so I was already a tad disappointed going in. The fact that they projected a blu-ray (which had horrific edge enhancement) didn't help matters. So this was a below average horror comedy (without any comedy) which had little to add to the many films it referenced (ripped off).

Whisperer in Darkness (Cinema) an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story. The first half of the film didn't really engage me, but then something changed and it was edge of the seat stuff until the end. This is a low budget adaptation made by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, shot in black and white the film tries (reasonably successfully) to recreate the look and feel of 1940's talkies.

Julia X (Bluray) I saw this last year at Fantasy Film Fest in Hamburg and greatly enjoyed it so had to pick up the Bluray when I saw it in the local video store. Its a great deal of fun. Recommended as an import (try Amazon.de).

Silver Linings Playbook - Went in completely cold - the wife wanted to see it which is usually a very bad sign - but absolutely loved it. The ending is a little iffy though.

Prometheus - loved it second time around, but want a Directors Cut.

Straw Dogs (Remake) - Not the train wreck I expected, in fact it was very watchable.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen – Very enjoyable. 7.5/10

Easy 8 – 5/10

Unknown – Better than I thought it would be. Changes pace enough to keep it interesting. 7/10
