Considering we replaced Crouch and Palacios in the squad with Adebayor and Parker (with about £15m to boot) then we did well.

After the close of the transfer window, one of my Liverpool supporting friends said to me how he thought we had "had a poor window and lost ground on the other teams challenging for fourth". At the time I pointed out that adding Friedal, Walker, Parker & Adebayor in to our first XI, whilst recouping £20m+ for Crouch, Palacios, O'Hara & getting Hutton, Jenas & Bentley off the wage bill really wasn't that bad. I reminded him of that during our match against them too.

I see Van Der Vaart is getting carried away after Spurs' win at the weekend:-

It's understandable that a professional footballer would want to believe that there were still some element of sport involved. He is of course deluded and Man City will just keep spending until they fill their trophy cabinet with ill deserved trinkets which are rendered worthless through the manner of their achievement. Financial doping is killing the game.

It's true, but unless there are regulations brought in to curb spending, you can't blame them. And yes, I say that as a Chelsea fan.

Our squad is a lot better than Arsenal's but we dont have the winning mentality yet. That ruthless desire for 3 points even when not playing well.
I think we are great at home when we play an expansive game with two wingers but we need to toughen up a bit and win the ugly ones especially against the teams struggling. For example think we lost both games to Wolves last year. Lost to Blackpool too. Those kind of games cost us fourth place last year.
Think Fulham on Sunday will be a good test to see how far we have come. Arsenal putting a run together shows it will be a hard long road to 4th place and its far too early to start dreaming about 3rd.
I think Parker is the big difference to push us forward and win. Would like to see us drop Lennon, put Sandro in and move Modric to the right. That should make us more robust and harder to beat.
Ironically I think a player of Van Persie's class is one of our missing pieces. I doubt he will sign a new contract though unless they buy big in the summer.
Sad news that Dawson might need an operation. Good to see Ledley out there though and hopefully Gallas is back soon. Think we need to make sure we get Cahill or Samba.

Not sure about Modric on the right. He is at his best in the middle. As they said on MOTD2 (I think it was), Parker has not only strengthened our midfield massively, it's freed up Modders to do what they hell he wants and it's really showing.

Lennon needs to keep his form up to stay in the team though.

He (Lennon) produced two assists for Bale on Sunday, what more do you want?

There are lot of games where he goes missing and doesnt produce any good crosses. I am just saying in away games when we need to compete for possession more we should stick in Sandro to help us win and keep the ball.
Aaron had a good game on Sunday but I cant think of that many over the last year! He is a frustrating player like Walcott. Good to see Bale on the scoresheet though although 2 weeks ago before I had taken him out of my fantasy league team would have been better!

Lennon has been a passenger this year, the only good thing he has offered us is a bit of cover for Kyle Walker because when Modric or VDV play on the right he is left completely exposed.......perhaps this shows what a great job Walker has been doing actually.

Call me cynical but what are the chances Harry was trying to find ANY excuse to get out of a Russian trip:

When I don't want to come in on a monday I often have heart surgery to get out of it.

To be fair, all it said yesterday was a minor 'medical procedure'

Not a fan of Cudicini generally but he's been far and away man of match for us.

Some nice touches from Falque and Carroll, everyone else disappointing tonight. Pav possibly worst player on the pitch. Townsend, Livermore, Fredericks...none look good enough to me.

He had two stents fitted as I understand it, not exactly open heart surgery but hardly a jab in the arm either.

Yeah Cudicini had a good game, shame about the result, didn't expect much else from this one though.

Missed this due to work unfortunately but seems like it wasn't a bad one to skip out on seeing. I like Townsend but was he not being played out of position at LB?

With PAOK at home and Shamrock Rovers being the final two matches, we should be good enough to get through to the business end of the competition. Its such a shame that UEFA has pretty much ruined the prestige of this cup but there are some excellent matches in the knockout stage.

Awful today. Why we treat this like a pre-season friendly I'll never know. By all means play the kids but not all at the same time. Why not start with a strong-ish team and then bring the kids on when the job is done. Everyone seemed to run around like headless chickens, so frustrating. The bright spot was Falque in the second half, there was some standout moments from him, although that might be because there were few standout moments from anyone else.

We've still got a chance to win the group but we've also got a chance of not qualifying, which would be disastrous.

So our best keeper in 20 years cost us 4th because of one goal that wasn't even over the line? Even if it had it only cost us 2 points, we'd still be 5 points from finishing 4th

If anyone cost us 4th it was Peter Crouch and you have to say Redknapp for continually playing him. The lack of goals from him was a total disgrace and why he was continually picked. He also managed to score an own goal at the City of Manchester stadium.

I'm between the two views, don't think we should play our first team but we have a big squad plus some supposedly promising youngsters, so we should aim to do fairly well, why not?

more disappointed with the performances today than the result, hoping for more from the youngsters and people like Pav and Bassong should really be shining-they were our two worst players probably!
