I understood Bellamy, because we are short in that position, but why would we want Benayoun back?

So he jumped when it was a sinking ship, but because he's not good enough for Chelsea and things are rosey at LFC now be wants to come back. I'm sure Spurs or Arsenal will take him....!

Interesting article discussing the fact and fiction of what we've actually 'spent' this year.

I think the essence of what he says makes sense, even if it comes with a huge amount of spin; is Carroll really likely to be on as "little" as <£60k a week on the back of a £35m transfer? (I'm just recalling the payslip for a very average Liverpool player, can't remember who, appeared 3-4 years ago and showed something like £40k a week).
But he's right that player wages have spiraled completely out of proportion to transfer fees (which are bad enough anyway).

Part of what FSG wanted was to bring sanity back to our wage bill - its why we've been happy to just give free transfers to the likes of El Zhar, Jovanovic, Poulsen because they were/are getting ridiculous salaries. I doubt some of the numbers in that article with some of it just total guesswork but some of it is very interesting reading. For those who think FSG are just pumping tens of millions into our transfer budget need to re-assess their thinking.

Looks more like £30k basic a week for Riise who was a first 11 regular for a number of years. Media reports said £80k a week at the time, but I've warned you about how they exaggerate our expenditure before

Carroll is on about £50k a week. He was on about £25k at newc and all reports at the time said he doubled his salary.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't anything nearly as high as £80k, and £40k was in my head for some reason. Even £30k-ish in 2007 for (IMO) a fairly mediocre player was mental though!

Christ, if that's the case he needs a new agent.
Ok, in a sane world £50k/week to a player of his limited experience is even too much, but I'm surprised that his agent wouldn't have pushed the "£35m player at one of the biggest clubs in the richest league in the world is worth at least £100k a week" line.

Carroll's salary really puts Man City's wages into perspective; Liverpool pay one of their big signings £50k a week and City pay multiple players £200k a week, it's ******* insane

Nobody else wanted Carroll did they? It's hard to play poker when you aren't holding any cards.

The biggest issue I have with the article is the suggestion that we'll actually get shut of Cole and Poulsen, and thereby save their portion of estimate £32m wage saving. Can't see it myself, unfortunately.

I think Poulsen will be back in Denmark before Wednesday - Joe Cole depends on Spurs for me.

One of the things that article doesn't address is bonuses and pay increases. So in 12 months time if Carrol (for example) is doing well and gaining interest from other clubs he will be in a position to renegotiate a new contract. Saying the club wants to keep him and offers him a new £100k per week contract for 5 years. The net spend increases, also what about all the players who re-signed before the summer and during? What about agents fees?

Transfer fees has become a very murky subject.

Not having a dig at Man City but their transfer and wage policy seems to have no real long term plan. How can they survive without the arab money?

They can't. It's not rocket science, no matter how much various City fans will tell you the club will be making in 10 years.

Hasn't Mansour recently said that they intended to throw a lot of money in at the beginning to get them to where they wanted to be (ie where they are now) as that'll set up a good grounding for the future? If so, it's no more than Chelsea did to get there. I do really hope (but doubt) that they will follow the fairplay rules as they certainly have good intentions IMO.

It is great that LFC seems to be being managed financially so much better now. When I think back to January 2011.........!

I'll guarantee you he was on a lot more than £25K a week at Newcastle.

Ermmm Chelsea are still making massive losses years later, all talk of long term plans is complete lies.... there is no chance in hell of either club changing that and competing legitimately unless either owner dies/gets assassinated.
