So our shopping list is £25m for Melo, £30m for Benzema and £40m for Rribery

I know we are supposed to have that kinda money (with the help of off loading Ade/Senderos/Gallas) but I don't think I will ever live to see the day when Wenger unviels a £20+m signing unless he signs them for Real Madrid

Stinks of agents talking up business. They could have used a more realistic club though!!

Brazil international Gilberto, who left the Gunners for Panathinaikos last summer, has spoken with his compatriot Melo and suggested he should sign for Arsenal.

"We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking," said Gilberto.

"He is exactly what they need - a powerful player with quality.

"If they got him it would be great because he is a player they need at the moment.

"I'm sure if they got him it would be a good signing. I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve."

He was getting well stroppy in last nights game.... Should fit right in imo...

The 7 red cards and 93 yellows in one season will mean he will hit in

It seems with City's signings that a Top 4 place isn't out of the question next season which means that one of the established big 4 clubs could get shunted out.

As an outsider, I'd have to say that you're favourites to be that club right now, and if you lose Adebayor and or even Fabregas then I'd say you'd be odd's on favourites.

Would realistic Arsenal fans agree at this point? If not, which of the other 3 would get shunted instead and why?

No doubt we are the outsider of the big 4, but big signings do not make a winning team, the harmony has to be right, which will not happen over night.

With, possibly, 4 "top strikers" RSC, Eto'o, Tevez and Robhino how would you keep them all happy and playing?

A couple of signings, Melo and a striker to replace Ade if he goes and we would be set.

Yes, I suppose it is fair to say that we would be favourites to drop out of the top 4, but I think that IF we can get Rosicky & Eddie back, IF we don't have another season of injury nightmares & IF we sign a couple of players, we could win the league (a lot of IF's I know ). We also need Cesc & a couple of others to get back to top form.
From what I've seen of Melo so far in the Confederation Cup, I haven't been impressed (need to catch up on a couple of games though).

Did you not get enough replies in the City thread then?

'They' have been saying for years that the Arsenal are going to drop out of the top 4 and they're still there. It was even a statement of fact that a midtable finish was going to happen when they eventually finished 4 points off the champions!

For me, they've got over the worse of the (stadium induced) contraints placed on them and the appointment of Gazidis and the arrival of a player like Arshavin would suggest they're on their way back.

Besides, as I said in the City thread, too many fans seem to think they're already there. When just likes Spurs & Villa & Everton & all the other 'new top 4 material' they're nowhere near. Yet.

Talking of Arshavin, a big big story in The Sun today:

ANDREY ARSHAVIN has stunned Arsenal by revealing he wants to play for Barcelona.

The Russian striker, 28, who joined the Gunners in a £16.9m deal five months ago, said: "If I have the chance to play for Barcelona, I'd be really happy."

*yaaawwwnn* No 'a source close to the player says' or 'in an interview with Russian daily Arshavin says'. 0 marks for effort imo.

Oh and apparently Wenger's getting The Benz. As likely to happen as that Sun story.

I agree. It's admirable as to what you've achieved running such a tight ship whilst paying off the stadium. But as an outsider I'd say that this summer is perhaps one where you need to put the stadium repayments on hold and spend some money on players as there is a genuine threat to someone's CL place.

I don't see that at all. From looking at the City thread you can see a bunch of pragmatic fans who have learned not to expect anything from their team. Top 6 is what the Chairman is targetting and where the fans seem to be at. As an outsider it is me that is putting the "What if" question to the forum. I just think it is a "possibility" that they might break the top 4, and I think the current Big 4 clubs are foolish not to recognise that and try to react accordingly - Particularly Arsenal right now....

As you say, this story is probably rubbish. But either way, Wenger shouldn't let Arshavin go even if he wants to leave. Let him sit on the bench until he's finished sulking.

I think the only club 'safe' in that top 4 is United, and even then it remains to be seen how their squad, the one as of today, copes sans-Ronaldo - but for me they're the only team that can begin to approach a 'take for granted top 4 finish'.

We've already seen the evolution of Wenger's new team; the Rafaloution has taken longer but last season would suggest it's coming to fruition so I think Chelsea should be the most concerned.

But Gooners have heard the prophesising of another team taking 'their' place in fourth for quite a few years now and I don't think there's too much reason to be overly concerned about City just yet, at least moreso than any other trailing club who have also posed a 'genuine threat', patuicularly when, despite all the hot air, they seem to be really struggling to pull in the calibre of player they need.

Personally I think Wenger made, or was forced to make, the right choice and persevere with the almost-mass criticism and go with growing a team together. It seems to me the Premiership is well underway in losing its sheen and with a lot of the top top players saying they'd prefer to play in Spain and Italy, whether for monetary or enjoyment reasons, and the loss of its biggest superstar(s) recently I think we're going to see a dropoff in quality of those teams who need to rebuild.

--

Seems we've lost Bischoff as he's out of contract and hasn't hads it renewed and Sport.co.uk reporting that Melo's signed a one year extension to his contract with Fiorentina....

Good news if true. I really haven't liked what I've seen of him in the Confederations Cup.

Four youngsters handed professional terms (Luke Ayling, Craig Eastmond, James Shea and Cedric Evina) while eight have gone (Amaury Bischoff, James Dunne, Rui Fonte, Abu Ogogo, Paul Rodgers, Rene Steer, Vincent van den Berg and Anton Blackwood).
