Felipe Melo for £15m and Thomas Vermaelen for £10m

Melo seems the Arsenal type (17 yellows and 3 reds in season) combative midfielder we need, don't know too much about Vermaelen, except people keep going on about his height!

LOL, I remember watching him for the first time a few years back and thinking 'hmmm, he looks like a Wenger player' - he had a good game but my goodness that compilation was, shall we say, fairly indicative of his finishing

Not seen much of him at all last season but he got 1 in 3 I think.

Why his is height such an issue? It's hardly stifled the likes of Puyol and Cannavaro from being top class centre backs.

Absolutely, & there are great big lumps who are useless (no names, no pack drill ).

Checked out a few Arsenal v Ajax games last night, some from a couple of years ago & one from when Thomas was only 18 & he looks a good player. He does like playing about with the ball too much even when he is under pressure, but he seems to have a good range of passing. Not sure Peter is going to like him much - he went down the back of Hleb's achilles in one challenge & got involved in some argy bargy with Pete's other favourite Rvp. And this was in a friendly!

I think it's a rule that when OurVP plays Ajax he gets kicked in the air

I remember Heitinga taking him out in another Arsenal friendly, completely hammered him; had to be stretchered off!

Looks like Hleb's not even going to get a second season in Barcelona; idiot.

RvP's apparently agreed a new contract.
-
Arsene has this to say today:

Wenger said: "Next season we will play the formation and system that most suits the players and the balance of the team.

"That means it's not rigid. It can evolve throughout the season, depending on circumstances and personnel.

"If you play with Theo Walcott for example, you are more tempted to go for three midfielders because Theo is more of a forward than a midfielder in a 4-4-2."

He added: "We lost Hleb and Flamini last summer and we have had to rebuild. But we have done that now and the future looks bright. We don't want to have to rebuild again so I want to keep all the players together for next season. I don't want to lose anyone.

"I want to add to the squad and I have identified one or two targets. But identifying players and buying them are two different things.

"Ideally I would like to bring everybody in before we start back in pre-season training in July. I don't want to leave it until the end of August."

He went on: "We are at a stage where we need to convince people that this team does a lot of things right. It does not need to be transformed. When you go on a long unbeaten run in the Premier League and reach two semi-finals, common sense should tell you that.

"We have to take encouragement from what we have done in the season just gone.

"I am fed-up with people who think I have £100million in the bank yet don't want to spend it. How can people think that? "The pride of the club is in having moved to a new stadium while maintaining the club at the top level.

"The policy of the club is that they have backed me in what I do and the way I do it.

"We now have to be strong enough to stick to that. We cannot pump £100m into it, so we must keep faith in what we are doing."

--

Wenger has now called on fans to give Bendtner time and understanding he is still young and must develop. Even so, he insisted that even now he has the ability to turn any game for the north London side.

"Nicklas has made big improvements since the start of the season. He has become an important player for this club,'' Wenger said in the July edition of the official Arsenal magazine.

"When Nicklas is really switched on and focused, he is a handful for any defence in the world.

"He has shown that in the second part of the season.

"People forget how young he is, but I am sure he has won many people over in the second half of the season.''

Wenger continues to talk of his squad's evolution, rather than it needing a major overhaul. He added: "We have done well since November in every competition last season.

"We just missed that final step, but I believe the team are getting that now as it becomes more mature.

"The team has matured tactically a lot over the season, and they are ready to challenge on all fronts next season.''

--

And our little Gitano, living up to his name, is now clubless What an utter waste of talent Reyes is, how did it go so badly wrong for him??

I know vanPersie had a good goal scoring season for us, but personally I thought his performances were way below the previous season. Hopefully next season we will get the best of both worlds.
As for Reyes. I think it all started going wrong with Aragones. No matter what Henry might say, I think he fell out with Reyes over those comments & Reyes was never going to stay after that. Quite why he didn't get back on track when he got back home though heaven knows.

Respected journalist Gabriele Marcotti has apparently reported that Melo will join Arsenal after the Confederations Cup.

Is he as respected as Guillem Balague?

My dad has been watching the Confederations Cup (I haven't bothered) & he reckons Melo has been ****
