Manchester United Thread – 10/11 - Move along, there's nothing to see here....

New season, new thread - same off the field problems.

Charity Shield on Sunday. That's come around quickly.

We've had a pretty solid pre-season and key players are returning to fitness.

Hernandez has been busy - Mexico at the weekend, then saw him in Altrincham last night at a reserve friendly, then Dublin tonight!

He could prove very useful this season.

Maybe he has some 'friends' in mexico who fancy some 'shooting' practice down in Florida

Where did the "Owen to Bristol City on loan" story come from? (on the BBC Gossip page/Daily Mail). Any credibility in it?

seems unlikely to me, i'd actually say it's more likely that if Ferguson said they could loan Owen, he was actually talking about Owen Hargreaves, because he could be fit again sometime in the next few months but we won't be able to play him unless we include him in the 25 man squad.

unless it was a short term loan, for say a month, to get him games.
Cant see it myself though.

Isn't it somebody just being a bit of an idiot because David James has signed for them?

How depressing is this - a couple of days before the curtain raiser and the only transfer news we have to discuss is Owen being loaned out to Bristol.

I think I might buy an XBox ....

Look at the positives;

Chicharito
Vidic (hopefully staying although not signed so could still go)
Evra staying? (its all gone quite about Madrid so lets hope it stays that way)
Chicharito

erm .......

Just had a look online. Places all over the ground. I know it's an evening kick off but I just can't remember this ever happening before.....9 days before the opening league game.

Staggering

I'd still like to think another midfielder will come in before the end of the window and/or that Anderson will come back realising he has it all to prove... I'd like to hope that defensively there won't be as many injuries as last year. I think upfront we're stronger - Chicharito looks like a real gem. I'm trying not to hope he could have a similar impact as Solskjaer but it's looking good. Hopefully Macheda is over his injury problems.

With Diouf having gone out on loan to Blackburn (which could turn out well if he gets the game time) I assume that frees a squad place that would otherwise have been taken up.

I'll be interested to see how Cleverley does given it's now been announced he's not going out on loan. Everything I've heard about him sounds promising, but you still worry about how much he'll play. It sounds like he carries the midfield goal threat of Gibson but can actually play well too...

He's probably scouting Zamora for when we sell Rooney to Real.

Despite all the pessimism around here at the moment, am I the only one very much looking forward to the new season? Although it has been a slightly frustrating summer in terms of new additions, I don't think anyone truly expected a marquee summer signing with the current financial status. However, in the little Chicharito, we do have a very exciting addition who can have an impact this season. Keeping hold of Vidic is fantastic news and almost represents a 'signing' in itself. I thought he was off and would have been worried given Rio's fitness.

We are a little short, I think we still need a creative central midfielder and a right-back. There is a small chance we will find a midfielder but I doubt a right-back will be incoming, I'd personally chuck Wes Brown back there and hope for consistency similar to our double-winning season, I don't think Neville is up to the task at his age and I'm not sure Rafael can make the grade, though I hope I am mistaken as he is very young. As for midfield, if the money isn't there how about popping Berbatov in the hole and seeing how he does? He isn't working out as a striker for us but he seems that no-one else is interested and he is an extremely talented player, so it would be nice to find a place for him, albeit not game-in, game-out.

My strong wish for this season is for Fergie to give the youngsters times and games to progress. If we put out a side with Scholes, Giggs and Neville starting, we will lose, I have no doubt. They have their places in the squad for sure, but we need to start winding down their careers for the good of the side. Hopefully we'll see a return to form for Carrick too, he has been missing since that night against Barca.

My prediction for this season is a solid top-four finish, actually I think we'll be in the race for the title come April, but I think we'll fall just short. We have the experience to mount a decent CL campaign and I think we can do well there. Fingers crossed for a good FA Cup run as well, it was disappointing to see us disappear in the third-round. Rooney will shine once again, Nani will progress but still frustrate and Van der Sar will sign another extension come January to save Fergie the bother of tracking down a replacement ().

Come on United! (it has to be better than watching England)
