Custom WordPress Templates

I'm looking to expand my current blog into a full website. I have to admit that I'm rather taken with WordPress and would like to use it again, so I'm really looking at a custom theme.

I'd get artwork (a main page, plus a 'content' page) produced in Photoshop format and would then require that to be turned into a WordPress theme.

The question is... should I get the main artwork based around an existing WordPress theme, so it would slot in easier, or are there people who can turn the Photoshop shop file into a theme? The former would be more cost effective I guess, but the latter would ensure I get the site I want.

Does any one have any recommendations on how to move forward?

Both options are possible, but you will save yourself a lot of effort/money if you base the design on a good theme that is already in existence IMO

Any recommendations for a good-looking, modern theme that has a three column front page and a two column (content on left, sidebar on right) page for the content itself?

I am currently in the process of converting a site made from Gimp -> HTML/CSS to Wordpress. One word - Nightmare!

My site is pretty complicated though in the way it uses images.
