There would also be liabilities that went with the aircraft themselves which the government would have to take on to continue flying them - IIRC a lot of airlines lease most of their aircraft (or have loans based on their value) so if the government started flying them it could mean they also took on any arrears or maintenance costs that were outstanding.
|
Pretty much this. The license gets removed immediately so the aircraft are grounded. Very few airlines actually own their aircraft outright, most are either leased (from companies like ILFC or GE Capital Aviation Leasing etc.) or are on finance from large banks, who want their money, do not want the plane to be suddenly on the other side of the planet where they have to recover it, adding wear and risk (heavy insurance coverage needed) etc, and everyone wants paying (airports, crew, fuel companies etc.). It is easier to just charter from other companies.
The exception to this would be a "wet lease" where the plane (and often crew) belong to another airline, sometimes are painted in the airline colour scheme etc. Those are where the government could pay the wet lease owners to operate (basically charter them). Not sure that happens that often as the government tends to have contracts with companies around the chartering for a lot of the routes, and probably uses other larger commercial airlines with space elsewhere.
EDIT: So for Orlando (MCO) it seems they contracted with Virgin Atlantic and Atlas Air to ferry people home. Atlas is a go to airline for these kind of charters. They have some high density 747-400's that seat around 500 so are good for getting a lot of people home quickly (if not the most comfortable). They have 767-300ERs too which are also high density config (all economy) and can do long haul flights for a decent amount of people.

Not sure how Sainsburys would come into it, I thought TUI might have been franchised off and not a renaming of the name brand, now guessing its the latter then.
Shame cos Tui were doing some good deals

"TU" is Sainsburys, "TUI" is Thomson. Thomas Cook is gone.

Yeah, TUI is still going and actually offering "deals" to take over the TC booked trips for people (not sure how much of a deal it really is)

TUI was the German travel company that bought British Thomson hence the silly name.
They are doing okay as own much more of the value chain unlike TC so not just the airline but also have their own hotels and cruise ships so much easier to control costs and demand, rather than be at the vagaries of the market buying those in.

Many of the repatriation flights were on TC planes with volunteers from TC staffing them. Not quite sure how that works but they obviously found a way round it with the leasing structures. Be interesting to see who ends up with their airport slots and planes.

I went to Florida with Thomas Cook, I recall it being a nice modern plane and you got a decent meal on it. It's a shame, once more it's just a little less competition, their flights were always pretty reasonable.

Forever 21 the US fashion retailer filed for bankruptcy protection (Chapter 11).

I think they closed most/all their UK stores already? (or did they even have any? There were in Europe for sure)

Ha, and H&M are probably the biggest reason they are failing

My usual - surprised it lasted so long. Hopefully not that many have done those schemes where you buy all the stuff and they hold onto it or asked for Mothercare vouchers.
It's a shame, there isn't really much else like it. You'd think one baby shop could survive.
That being said, in all honesty these administrations nowadays seem to be more about getting yourselves out of a few leases for profitless shops than any real chance of going under.
