Official League 1 Thread 2008-2009

So less than a week away from the start of the season. How do you feel your team will perform.

Scunthorpe and Southend rejoin us after a little holiday.

My team, Yeovil, have had a slightly dodgy summer really. I think it's 13 players have now left over the close season. We don't officially have a keeper yet! And we really need 1 or 2 strikers if we are to achieve anything.

If we can get at least 1 striker in and if the injuries are not too bad, then I can see us finishing mid table. With no strikers or with lots of injuries like last season then we will struggle.

Star players for us this year will be Nathan Smith, our Left Back signed from Potters Bar, if he continues to improve he'll probably be sold in January Gavin Tomlin has looked good in the friendlies so far.

Swindon - we have improved slightly but are still missing one or two to fire the goals to make us playoff contenders 7th-13th. But we are starting to get a good backbone to the team.

Star Men: Simon Cox (Striker), Anthony McNamee (winger, and when on form will take the **** out of any defender).

Roll on Saturday, home against the scousers Tranmere.

How long can you keep hold of him for? From what little I've seen of him, he's too good for League 1.

Carlisle lost one of the best young keepers in the county to Coventry and also one of the best young striking prospects in Joe Garner to Forest, despite the fact he's still injured. We've got Michael Bridges back - surprisingly - and new owners (basically just a shuffling of previous).

Last year's last minute home defeat in the play-off semis will haunt me for a long time.

Ambitions for this year: Hold Leeds at Brunton Park. Beat Leicester away. I have no idea where we'll finish.

Blimey, I didn't even realise they had a football team in Potters bar!

Southend mustn't have gone far on their holidays last season

Sadly it was Colchester who took the little holiday

We look well equipped to put in a challenge. Losing Lisbie was a bit of a blow but Gillespie seems like he could be a more than adequate replacement. Have gone well in pre-season (not that that counts for a lot) and am looking forward to the first game in the new stadium tomorrow night.
Think we are a reasonable play-off bet.

I expect they had a holiday so technically I wasn't wrong!

Neither did we. We've signed 2 players from Fisher Athletic as well. Big budget cuts at the club over the summer

Cant say I'm optimistic about this season even after our holiday

The lack of signings, the small squad and the loss of Gower mean we'll finish mid table at best

Left back is still a concern as we've missed out on Mulgrew and turned down Clapham

Still, got my season ticket and carling cup ticket and the derbys against Col U and Orient to look forward to

Who knows. I'd like to say at least this season, but if he scores a load of goals I can see a championship club coming in for him during the Jan transfer window. Everyone has a price, everyone.

Same goes for McNamee too. Lose those two and our season will be a nothing season.

Same thing happened to us away at Brighton a few seasons ago. 2 mins from the playoff final. You'll be OK when the season gets going and new disappointments replace the old ones!

@sleep4ever - Lack of signing, it seems the same story everywhere . In the interests of fair play, I'll drive Billy Paynter back to Southend for you. He's still a slow carthorse who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo hard working goal machine

Blimey! We have 2 keepers.

Josh Wagenaar signed yesterday. Today we finalised a 3 month loan for Asmir Begovic from Portsmouth. Both are Canadian.

Hmmmmmmmmmm Betsy to Southend. Obviously offering him more ££££. Oh well he is a City reject anyway and we have our quota of them. Onto the next target.

So what did everyone think of thier 1st game of the season?

Rained all day in Yeovil yesterday. First game of the season is normally so hot, but this year we had rain and very strong winds!

The game itself disappointed me. Last season we played too much long ball for most Yeovil fans' tastes, all through preseason we've played the ball on the ground and have looked good, so 1st game of the season and we resort back to long ball.....

Our play showed me again how desperate we are for a striker. Our goal came from a great chance for Warne (A midfielder who we play up top on his own) the keeper saved his shot but only parried it across the goal for Tomlin to score.

2nd half we hardly had a chance as Walsall had something like 70% off the ball. Even then it took a shocking back pass from Skiverton to gift them their goal.

One pleasing thing was that Marc Bircham had his best game in a Yeovil shirt. He played more like we know he can, which is kind of funny in a way as he could be off very soon to Millwall.

1-1, a long season ahead if that's anything to go by.

Feedback from Bristol for Carlisle was pretty positive. Danny Carlton, who was a bit of a whipping boy in his first season, seems to have finally settled in, scoring in pre-season and two yesterday. People seemed to think we looked pretty comfortable in midfield and we actually have options to mix things up now. See what we're like against Crewe next week in the first home game. Biggest test I think will be what kind of crowd we get. It'll be a good gauge of what people are thinking on the ground.

Excellent opening day win, 3-1 at home against a presumably under strength Tranmere. Scored in the 4th minute and didn't look back. Played some good stuff in patches but had a few worrying moments at the back. But we deserved it overall.

QPR tomorrow, should be a good crowd/game and a sterner test too.
