Doctor Who 2009/Series 5.
No full series for 2009, instead consisting of three "specials", starring David Tennant. Apparently the full series 5 will be broadcast in 2010. If you read the press release, nothing is confirmed about who will star in the 2010 series.

Answers the Tennant in Hamlet speculation very effectively, doesn't it?

Great news that Tennant is staying on. He was such a huge improvement in S3 over S2 that I'm happy he's effectively on for two more years.
I can only hope that the specials are full 1.5 hour shows as opposed to Christmas-style one hour efforts though.

Apparently there's an interview with RTD in some magazine where he says they went a bit too dark with Series 3 so Series 4 is going to be more lightheated wacky fun.

Any news on whether series 5 is definitely without RTD or not?
RTD says every year he's held of taking it too dark, implying there was darkness to come. SO unless that's happenig with these specials this idea of the dark place he's going to take the Doctor is bladerdash!

I've heard some insider speculation, that this move will allow some breathing space to get the next production team together.

Excellent news that the beeb have come out and commited to Who beyond next year. Not so good that '09 will see just 3 hours (probably) before a full blown series again in 2010.

From what i remember The sun printed that after series 4 it would change to a few specials, something that was immediately rubbished by many on here

Heh, I remember that. The rule of thumb appears to be that if a story in The Sun appears on Outpost Gallifrey first, it's most likely horse manure, whereas if they source the story themselves, it usually has some semblance of truth.

What I remember being rubbished here was the Sun claiming that RTD was cancelling the series and that we'd ONLY get a few specials.
I suppose they want to have a bot of breathing space when they get the new production team in - good idea, will give the show a chance to shrug off rtd.

Only it was sourced from Outpost Gallifrey forums. Ian Levine had a source that clamied there would be a series of specials after series 4 and the specials would conclude the series. Now half of that is true about the specials, half wrong because the BBC say there is going to be a series 5, but it's still over 2 years away, so anything could happen...

Just read the quote and he seems to think "blink" was too dark and wants to head in the opposite direction I don't think Blink was dark or the human nature 2 parter apart from the very end bit with the family
Quote:
I love those final three episodes, but part of me misses a great big Dalek/Cyberman war – the fun of it! I’m sure that fandom was luxuriating in that run of ‘Human Nature’, ‘The Family of Blood’, then ‘Blink’, which was very dark, and then the darkness of bringing back the Master. Fandom might think that’s the way forward... but it’s not. Next year we’ll be pulling back from the darkness. Absolutely. The greatest mistake with TV drama is to presume that darkness=good. And if you're expecting Doctor Who to head further that way just because of the success of ‘Human Nature’ onwards, that’s not going to happen. Sorry.... we’re starting at Christmas, with a big, fun spectacular, and then the first few episodes next year are going back to the colour and liveliness of ‘Smith and Jones’ and ‘The Shakespeare Code’. More fun! Those are my instincts.”

I was searching for the words but those are perfect.
They got 3 episodes right in the last series and he thinks they are the wrong direction?
He really is going to fudge this right up so the next production team have to do a james bond reboot to forget the drivel he has left.

Indeed the guy is contradicting himself. First he acknowledges that Human Nature onwards was successful - but somehow doesn't want more of it.
Personally I like the darker more serious episodes but I'm happy with a few lighter ones too. But let's keep the mix rather than forcing the show in one direction.
