i could understand Pennant's price if we'd been forced into a bidding war.but it appears there was no interest from anyone else which makes the high fee a bit baffling

No no adam did you learn nothing from Brum/Pennant.
We offer £10M, Feyenoord want £20M ... so we pay £25M

How come every player we have signed over the last couple of season have all been closet boyhood liverpool fans

Parry must interview them and say something like: "So who did you support as a lad" . Player: "Erm Liverpool?". Parry: "Good lad your signed and for good measure we will give your old club a few extra quid for letting us have a boyhood supporter"

It's disappointing that we always seem to be forking out big sums for players but only get token amounts for selling, but you need to factor in that the players we sell are the ones we want rid of and the ones we are after are rated higher.
Players we've payed out large sums for are either the best at their club (Xabi, Pennant, Momo, Crouch) or have a good reputation (Morientes, Garcia) so they come at a premium. There was no bidding war for Pennant, but Brum knew we wanted him but weren't desperate to sell, so it cost us. If Rafa had walked away from the deal they wouldn't really mind as they'd still have their best player, as per the Alves situation.
When we try and offload players everyone knows we want rid because they aren't good enough, so they can get away with paying peanuts. Excluding Owen, who was sold at a discount due to the time left on his contract, who have we sold that we would want to hold on to? If we were to sell our best players we would get premium rates for them without a doubt, but I'm glad we are only selling the makeweights.
If you think about it, it means we are in the right position as we are only selling off dead wood, which you can't expect a good price for, and we're not forced to sell off our best assets.

Possibly not that big a factor ... but there was the fact that Brum didn't have to sell.

He wasnt a less than popular choice with me, I wanted to sign him when I thought he was £3m, would have been happy if we got him for £4m, but to pay £6.7m rising to £8m is just stupid and wasteful from our board. I am just sick of hearing this "wait and see what he's like" argument, he would play the same whether we paid £1m for him or £20m for him, that's not the issue. The issue is extra funds went on him that could have been spent elsewhere.

Secondly, What's the "correct fee"? It's not like a footballer has a BOM that can be calculated as a fixed price.
The correct fee is not £8m I will tell you that much- there was no-one against us, he has a checkered past, if he flops his resale value will be peanuts.

Yes £8m is too much but the reasons why we bought him for (potentially that) are obvious. He's English, they didn't need to sell, they have to pay Arsenal 25%, they know we've been desperate to fill that position for two seasons and as you say LFC are pants at negotiating.

As to selling players for a decent fee, I agree with cheeseypuffs, when have we ever got anywhere near the price we paid for a player when we've wanted him to go? It irritates now because we are short of money and Houllier bought a lot of expensive duds towards the end of his time at Liverpool.

British players will often be more expensive than thier foreign counterparts, that's why we have so many foreigners in our teams. As cheesypuffs said, We rarely sell for a good price as it isn't a good player we're selling. Put Stevie G or Xabi on the market ands see what we get for them.

Didn't we recently sell one of the youngsters for considerably more than we paid for him?

Independent this morning is saying we are back in for Kuyt and we are now the only club in for him.

His WC form has put a lot of clubs off and Feynord were hoping for an auction but that's not going to happen now.

Hopefully a deal can be done in the next couple of days and we will then be sorted for the new season.

I am well happy about Pennant because with Gonzales they give us awesome width.

I hope Kuyt is coming, really do.

I suppose when I said Kuyt was complete crap during the World Cup, I wasn't thinking about how we'd be the only one to buy him and still pay over the odd.

Or may be not!

Diao continues working with Rafa

There have been rumours that Salif Diao failed to impress during his trial at Charlton with others claiming he failed a medical.

However, as confirmed by the local media, the Liverpool midfielder didn't even attend the trial as it was cancelled.

We've been saddened to see so many Reds sticking the knife into Diao recently. Things haven't worked out for the lad, simple as but at the end of the day he's still a Red.

Some of the abuse aimed at him has been pathetic. He didn't set his transfer fee and he collects a wage just like every other player does. He wants to move on and he will when the opportunity is there.
Wonder if the trial was cancelled by us or Liverpool

----------Reina

Changing to something like....
