Check out Zeta Minor for some screen grabs of the upcoming Universal R2 Kong - both b/w & colourised ( ) versions + comparison shots from the old R2 release.
The new R2 version does look better but not by a huge amount - certainly no night & day difference. Still no official word if this is a port of Warner's new re-master or Universal's own attempt - I hope the R2 print is unique to Universal and Warner pull something really special out of the bag.

Last year Warners were boasting 'Kong falls with no gaps (lost frames) from the Empire State Building.' - that will be the key to whether this is the Warners restoration or not. *
I'm still slightly discombobulated by the confusion earlier this year when 'Kong' appeared in a Warners R2 upcoming list. Yes, the rights should have - and do - belong to Universal. But when it first started appearing at etailers, the RRP was reasonably and reassuringly high, indicating that a super-duper 2 disc was on the way. Had Warners done some sort of deal with Universal?
Then the RRP dropped like a stone and, yes, it was revealed to be a Universal disc after all. The price is so low, I cannot now believe that any deal has been done with Warners to use their restoration. Whatever happened before - simple error, or corporate bust up - I think Universal have had to paddle their own canoe, they've simply chucked the old transfer through the machine for a perfunctory digital wash and brush up, added a crayoned in version and the result is a real Universal horror...
*EDIT - now I note that recent on-line press releases are saying that it's the missing frames of Fay Wray that have been corrected. Hmmmm... I'll go a little further now having thought about it; there is no way the Universal R2 and Warners R1 are one and the same transfer. If I had a reputation, I would stake that on it...
BTW, another early reviewer is shown a copy of the Universal R2 here

I don't go along with Zeta Minor's assumption that "everyone is assuming that Universal's "restored master" is simply a PAL conversion of the version that has been prepared for Warner Home Video's forthcoming Region 1 release". I've always assumed the R2 would be Universal's own re-master (why should Warner do any deal with this appalling company!) and I'm sure picture quality of the Warner version will be far better.

The King Kong Collection (King Kong 2-Disc Special Edition/Son of Kong/Mighty Joe Young) is still $20.98, and in view of Julian's news, R1 is the only game in town right now it seems.
BTW, even I couldn't resist the tin at that price Hmmm, shiny tin...
Apologies; I've tried every which way to link direct to the products, but the affiliate link button won't play, but at least it takes you through to the main page and finding it is easy enough

Confirmed by this quote from Home Theater Forum:
"Okay, I guess I should chime in and say that I've actually seen some footage from the Warner Brothers restoration, and it is immaculate. Not a scratch or piece of dirt anywhere. So I doubt the R2 Universal disc is using the WB restoration... "

That's exactly what it is; there's something utterly barmy, yet hypnotising, watching two guys in big rubber suits trashing a miniature cardboard city. Strangely, a million miles away from the '33 Kong, but only one step down from the '76 iteration
Douglas; that's good to hear about the Warners R1, and precisely what I've been expecting from them.

Thanks
I actually watch Godzilla last night. My dad taped it off Ch4 a few years back. Its the original japanese version too !
I thought it was a fabulous movie. Here we have a monster movie without the glitz and glamour of a hollywood blockbuster. I loved the storyline and the special effects amazing !
So whens the BFI version coming out ?
