Are there any differences between the mgm R1 and R2 versions of The Mechanic. I recently bought the R2 for my dad and I have to say it's pretty bad. Picture quality was ok but the dvd package was a joke. To say it was barebones would be an understatement. There wasn't even a scene selection.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Where have all the Charles Bronson fans gone???
I usually use Dvdbasen to find reviews of dvd's, although there aren't too many on The Mechanic.

Once Upon a Time in the West (Take your pick from Paramount)

Although the R2 only has a rather horrible 5.1 remix soundtrack.

Cheers for that guys, nice one.

Watched Violent City (Blue Underground) at weekend and loved it. Undiscovered minor classic IMO. One gripe I have though is the restored footage is in Italian with english subs. Didn't really bother me at the time as an onscreen message before the movie said this footage was never dubbed into english. Since then I've read that an old VHS copy of the movie has this footage - IN ENGLISH. So why couldn't that be used here. Thats a bummer. Or they could've got voice artists to record an english dub a la the new Good the Bad and Ugly. Disappointing.

Of course its good to have the movie on dvd at all (fully restored), and aside from that everything else was excellent: movie, picture, sound, extras.

Now does anybody know what's the best version of Valdez Horses/Chino on dvd?

Again, any info/feedback greatly appreciated.

According to Rewind The American Laserlight R0 is the best as it has better extra's.

The Evil That Men Do (R2 Carlton) is that the full uncut version ? as opposed to previous releases being butchered in the torture scenes.

Cheers ralph wiggum

But it's been said a few times in this thread that Laserlight releases are dire (to put it mildly!!). Don't really mind about the extras too much. I'm mostly concerned with the picture quality and correct aspect ratio and uncut. Does anyone have info on the Momentum?

The Network dvd is exactly the same as the US 'R' version restoring all the violent footage with the exception of the shotgun exit wound to John Glover's back.Ironically this brief bit of footage is intact in the old silver box Carlton dvd I own.I think the Australian version is totally uncut.
The electrocution footage at the start is considerably longer (more gory too) now in the Network version compared to the Carlton one.The sequence where Bronson grabs a thugs testicles is longer & there is a little bit more blood in the sequence where Bronson kills the henchman with a throwing knife (blood coming from his mouth)

My favourite Charles Bronson film by some distance is Hard Times (I prefer the alternative title The Streetfighter). I would pay Ł50 for an extended director's cut of the film including the one or possibly two deleted fights.

It was released on DVD in Spain (ww.dvdgo.com), but is no longer available. Now and then the movie is shown on the BBC (UK).

I recall seeing this film some 20 years ago but thought the native Americans featured were the Sioux and not Apache. I may be wrong.

I don't own this Spanish DVD of "Run of the Arrow" so I don't know what the quality is. I have two other Spanish DVDs of westerns with Randolph Scott ("The Cariboo Trail" and "Frontier Man of The Plains") and I doubt if these are official releases. The picture quality is quite bad. So, better check out what the quality is before you order it.

SHOCK have released a nice looking version of THE WHITE BUFFALO (1977) in Australia.Received it yesterday & it's anamorphic, has a trailer & it's also R0.Unfortunately no subtitles if anybody needed them as an option. The picture is a vast improvement on the old UK Digital Entertainment version,& is recommended to fans.
