AVAST Antivirus - updates? vs NOD32

Just wondering..........

I have bought and paid for NOD32 on my desktop machine and at the moment, I seem to be getting a Virus database updated message virtually every day (or two) at the moment. A Lot of activity.

I installed AVAST on my laptop, but apart from 1 update where is says (sound sample) your virus database has been updated, there has been nothing else happening.

Should I draw any conclusions from this?
Does Avast do any updates on the quiet to itself, or does no popup blue message and speech mean no update at all?

You think NOD32 is much better than AVAST ?

Personally I think NOD32 is the best antivirus i've come across and I've tried most of them over the years. The fact that its updated so frequently reassures me no end. The only one that comes close for me is F-Prot. I like my AV software to be as unabtrusive and as resource easy as possible. Its not often I pay for software, I prefer to go for freeware/open source options, but I quite happily stumped up for NOD32 over avast/AVG.

You're like me then....

The thing that's annoying me is that I've paid for it, so why can't I put it on my laptop as well.

If I buy a game I can install and play it on both my desktop and laptop, so I don't see why they have any right to moan.
I don't know if they WOULD know if I put it on my laptop as well anyway.

The difference with a game is that you normally can only use it on one machine at a time due to needing a CD.

You've got two separate machines, the software will be running on each PC at the same time - hence you need two copies - seems logical to me

I use Avast myself, not seen many updates over the last few weeks

Yeah, mine twirls around. Only (quite/very) occasionally does the large blue square pop up and the Sound Sample Says (something like) "Virus Database Updated"
I know there are TWO kinds of updates you can manually check for.

Does anyone know if it does any updates on the quiet, or, if there's no big blue box and sound sample, then nothing is being updated?

Just I guess seems odd that one virus checker gets many updates and another gets very little.

It could mean the one that gets very little is still protecting fine and does not need any.

The latest update I have for Avast is 0453-1

The "Notice" section under the Log Viewer will give you times of recent updates...I've had 5 updates since the 21st (although I've not been online everyday)

You have the latest update installed and 5 updates since 21/12 is about right. There has been a total of 14 updates in December alone with the newest version of Avast (4.5.549) being updated on the 6th
