Forget todays obvious results, we tossed away 4th place with our capitulation against Liverpool and the game against Fulham.

For far too much of the season, we only had Bale and when he wasn't interested, we got few results.

We need another 'keeper to replace Friedel who is too slow across the ground nowadays.

A number of times this season, both full backs have let us down, so I would replace both as first teamers.Give Walker another season in the squad to get his defending back up to scratch.

Most importantly, we need two proven goalscorers up top, as Adebayor only turning up 2 or 3 games a season is just not good enough.

Re: The Tottenham Hotspur Thread 2012/2013

Another cracker from bale today but yes she that qualification was lost against Fulham, and other results earlier this season - Wigan, etc.

Fair play to arsenal, that was some run (8 wins in 10 was it?).

But as said record points total and record points for anyone finishing fifth in a 38 game season. Not much consolation but certainly a promising first season for AVB.

We would have won the league if we'd kept Harry and Crouchy.

AVB out..

Obviously massively disappointed but overall a good season and a platform to build on. AVB sounds like he has ambitious plans in the transfer market and I hope Levy backs him.

Having Sandro and Kaboul back will make a world of difference too. Townsend looks like he is making a step up too and Carroll looks promising. Reason for optimism and good that we took it to the wire.

In all fairness It's been a privilege watching Bale this season, if he decides to leave then so be it, he's dug us out of the crap so many times this season and I wouldn't hold it against him if he opted for a team who can offer him Champions League football.

What a left foot.

Shame about his right! He's so one-footed, it's crazy.

Unbelievable booking for him today - he's got his reputation now, will be very hard to shake off.

Definite pen. Awful decision.

I was in the North Stand at the opposite end of the ground & whilst I couldn't tell if it was a penalty or not, what was so infuriating was that Mariner clearly a long long way back was so absolutely decisive in his decision that it was a dive.

As for the 'false dawn' it confused the hell out of us because in one of the corporate boxes behind us they had the Arsenal game on & it was clearly still 0-1... We joked that hopefully someone had paused the viewing earlier and it was on time delay!

Agreed but it wouldn't have made a difference and you reap what you sow in a way. Drogba never got a penalty for us after he was confirmed a serial diver.

In a further twist to it all Mariner was the referee in December invited to visit the club/bale to advise on the diving situation after 2 consecutive yellow cards were given to Bale despite replays showing them to be actual fouls - at Sunderland & against Liverpool iirc. He then gives him the third harsh/wrongful one of the season today.

I'd have liked to have known what Mariner said to Gareth before kick off in the second half. He was talking to him for a good minute or two..... probably just said something like "you were too theatrical" or similar.

Hopefully we can bring in at least a couple of strikers thats where we are badly lacking and a replacement for Bale obviously

It has been on the cards for the past few weeks so not a surprise that we finished 5th however it doesn't make it any easier to take, unfortunately Chelsea and Arsenal hit form in the final quarter of the season - we weren't far behind but silly results cost us. Then again, we only won a LOT of matches due to long range strikes - skillful of course but it's worrying that we have to rely on them rather than being able to break down opponents more readily.

There will be a transfer saga with Bale, if he goes then good luck to him but obviously hope he stays as his influence and ability is worth so much. I'd say that even with CL football we can't attract the top tier players due to the budget restrictions i.e. trying to be ran without petro dollars being thrown around. With a lot of managers moving around this summer then there could be quite a lot of players cast off from the bigger clubs as new targets come in. It would be fantastic if we could get all business done early in the window but we know that isn't going to happen.

Re: The Tottenham Hotspur Thread 2012/2013

Papers linking us inevitably with Moutinho again today. Somehow the price has gone up to Ł30m although I guess Porto did win the league.

Need more goals from midfield (not including bale as a midfielder there!), plus a couple of strikers.

An interesting summer ahead. Obviously need to keep Bale (think we will personally) and show some intent. AVB was dead right in his comments about 72 points still not being enough and that the others will all invest this summer. Well be hard to keep touch but the club have to go for it.

What's the current stadium situation? The way I see it, the team isn't miles behind, you have a good, ambitious manager and your training ground is being upgraded/has been upgraded. However, without the matchday income levels of Man U, Arsenal, Man C and Chelsea (to a lesser extent) it'll be harder to overtake them.

There’s a statement on the website from Levy about how we’re doing it the ‘tottenham way’ and talking a lot about financial fair play. Seems like he got burned by Bentley and Bent etc so would expect a couple of younger (cheaper) players rather than the couple of headline signings we need (VDV best example and he only signed as another transfer fell through and we were in the CL)

Can’t help thinking this was our best chance we’ll have for a while as those above us (including newly sponsored Arsenal) will be spending big bucks. I’m sure everyone can look back at certain games but we could have afforded the Wigan/Fulham/Liverpool losses which are freshest in the mind had we not had the understandably horrific start (with AVB starting with Livermore for example)

Is there no word of a Sporting Director or whoever it will be to oversee the high level approach of the club? Was this not the person to be dealing with transfers etc leaving the coaching to AVB and money matters to Levy?

....or has that idea been put on the scrapheap?

Think I saw an interesting stat yesterday that Spurs were one of only two clubs who didn't get a penalty all season.

If Bale does go you can be sure that Levy will hold out for top money for him, whether that will leave you time to bring in a replacement remains to be seen.

In the League I think it's now been almost 2 seasons since we had a penalty.
