Appaloosa - new western from Ed Harris

Appaloosa is a new western directed by and starring Ed Harris which just opened stateside. DVD Talk has given it a very positive review here.
I don't know when it'll get released across the pond but I think it sounds promising for western fans. I'm looking forward to it.

Ah!
I'm not in the UK at the moment - working on the continent - so that would explain why I hadn't noticed it.

Strangest release for a major film ever. It wasn't on any schedules till two weeks before opening and then they just release it with zero marketing and before any critics got to see it.

I can imagine keeping stum about Disaster movie or something but this looks to be a quality film.

I watched it last week and it was pretty good. It dragged a bit during the middle but Harris and Mortensen were excellent together and kept it enjoyable.

It was out 1 week around ours so did not get to see it, which as usual sucks!

Stick loads of crap on the screens and get rid of anything at least looking good, way to go!

I think part of the problem is that the marketing people are unsure of how to promote a western these days or who to pitch it to.

This is going to last a maximum of 2 weeks where I am. The first week it had a variety of times and now this coming week it's only on for one time each night. Also, as per usual, it's only showing in one of the local cinemas. The rest have got all the blockbusters showing.

I reckon we'll see a dvd release relatively quickly.

Caught this at Cineworld a week back. Not bad. Drags in places, but the acting is top notch.

Caught the very last showing before it went off - was the only person in the cinema.

Very enjoyable. Exceedingly leisurely pace (think Open Range, but without the big climax) and focusses on the relationship between Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, who are both excellent and their friendship is utterly convincing. Very handsomely shot too. On the downside, Renee Zellweger is as irritating as she usually is (she plays an irritating character too, so there's twice the irritation) and like Open Range we get a Brit villain foisting a terrible American accent on us (Jeremy Irons, who hasn't improved his since Die Hard with a Vengeance).

Ooh, it has Lance Henriksen in it too.

I thought this was pretty darn good. I liked the easy pacing, the realistically abrupt action scenes, the attention to character and period detail and the rare feeling that you didn't know where it was going next. It really does look great too.

Agreed on all counts. It's not a perfect film but it does rank as one of the best of the recent westerns - streets ahead of the overhyped remake of 3:10 to Yuma.

Saw this at the weekend I thought it was really good modern western. Enjoyed both Harris and Mortensen's performance. I thoought Zellweger was mis-cast though she brought nothing to the role. Good movie and well worth a watch

I enjoyed the film but felt the characters were quite one dimensional, and sometimes it felt like a comedy with the repetition of Ed's character searching for the right words, and Viggo being the smarter sidekick archtype. Renee's character seemed totally weird and useless really.

I was unsure if it was aiming towards a film with more depth like Open Range and Unforgiven or going for a Saturday morning kid's cowboys and indian vibe.

I think the characters were pretty well developed and that aspect was one of the strongest elements of the picture. The comedic moments blended well with the tense scenes and never seemed forced. Remember that most of the great westerns of the past always managed to achieve that balance of humour and suspense. It taps into a traditional western vibe and doesn't fit in the harsh revisionist category alongside Unforgiven. Having said that, I wouldn't call it a kiddie's cowboys and indians yarn; there's more depth there than that and it's reminiscent of a good late 50s oater.
Zellweger's character was one of the movie's weaknesses, but I'm not sure it's fair to blame the actress, as the way the part was written wouldn't give anyone playing that role much room to manouevre.

Saw this on dvd at the weekend. Really enjoyed it. It's a bit drawn out in places, but excellent performances from Harris & Mortensen, & overall a very well made, solid western.

Special mention must go to the superb end credits. Nothing but beautiful shots of props to represent each character, played out to some rockin' Tom Petty (well, Mudcrutch).

As for Zellweger, I didn't really like her either. Totally miscast, & the red hair did her no favours either. According to IMDB, Diane Lane was originally cast in that role but dropped out during preproduction. Shame shame shame.

Caught this on DVD last week. Really liked it. I'll echo what everyone else has said about Zellweger.

Way better than 3:10 to Yuma, and deserved to do a lot better than it did.
