Offbeat Westerns...

Having watched my (radgy VHS) of El Topo and then the French R2 of Blueberry the other night, I’ve been thinking about similarly (or not) offbeat Westerns such as:

Eagle’s Wing (1979) which I haven’t seen for over a decade and really would like to again…

The Last Movie (1971) not strictly a Western, sure, but integrating elements of that genre in its movie-within-a-movie

(The aforementioned) El Topo (1970): has this had a dvd release yet? I’d love to hear Jodorowsky ranting about it on a commentary…

Welcome to Blood City (1977): SF Western – Jack Palance being great therein and Keir Dullea turning up for the ride…

Any others anyone would care to recommend?

Terror in a Texas Town is about as offbeat as I go off the top of my head (unless you count Westworld, and I don't); Sterling Hayden as the quickest on the draw with a harpoon.

Grim Prairie Tales is a horro anthology set in the Wild Wesr, so has Western themes running through it. For the most part, it's pretty dreary stuff, but is redeemed by a humdinger of a final story involving a quick-draw shootout in the dusty streets....

Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia deconstructs the western genre quite brilliantly (and the gangster movie come to think of it, but that's another thread).

An old Spaghetti Western called 'Face To Face' is pretty odd ball and a good movie. Was on Moviedrome several years ago, I bought it on VHS but sold it when I got rid of all my VHS. Not sure if its available on DVD.
Also check out 'The Big Silence', another goody - Spaghetti Western in the snow.

What about Dead Man? I haven't seen it, but have seen some interesting reviews, and would like to...

Dead Man's excellent: right up my alley. Everything's monochrome in anephric land.

If you see and like this, give Blueberry a shake (although they're not close stylistically).

Hey, Mr. A. Yeah, sorry bout dat. One or two 'real life' issues demanding my attention at the mo, leaving little time for erudite banter.

BTW, any suggestions of films for people who wish they were dead? Doesn't have to be a western...

(don't mind me)

Jesus, I remember Lust in the Dust... blast from the past

Walker obviously qualifies as well, then.

Not forgetting the extraordinary "Django Kill" and the marvellously political "Bullet For The General".

Matalo! is a delirious Italian western directed by Cesare Canevari starring Corrado Pani, Lou Castel, and Claudia Gravy. It's the usual bandits fighting over their latest haul plot but with strong doses of sadism, out of control camera work, and a fantastic acid rock score by Mario Migliardi. It's a love it or hate it film but personally I love it.

Koch Media in Germany were supposed to release it but I read they had problems with the transfer they got from the right holders.

Evil Roy Slade - pilot for a series that was never made. Starred John Astin and was rumoured to be a favourite of Salvador Dali's. Marevellous film.

Texas Across the River - BBC used to show this all the time, and It always made me laugh like a drain. Been MIA for some time now, though.

I'll second MrSpeed's Four of the Apocalypse - cruel and sentimental with a great 70s OST (I even own the CD).
