A new adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel (the third, after David Lynch's attempt and a made-for-TV SciFi Channel version). Supposed to be coming December 2020, but who knows?
As a huge Dune fan (see username), I'm… cautiously optimistic. Most of what we see and hear in the trailer is faithful to the novel, and there's a lot that looks good, but I'm not entirely sold on the overall design, which doesn't exactly scream "baroque space aristocracy," or the music (Hans Zimmer composing). Presumably the Pink Floyd cover is just for the trailer?
Also, this adaptation splits the book in two, with this first film reportedly covering about 3/4 of the novel (where there's a time jump).
Oh, and just to get it out of the way: Yes, they've changed "Jihad" to "Crusade," at least in the marketing.
That's an obscure username, you've not exactly called yourself Paul Atreides.
I liked the Ornithopters you saw briefly, but beyond that I wasn't overly excited (being a fan for 25 years), not quite sure what aside from the Paul character being not what I imagined.
Yeah, finally some proper 'thopters! The video games all had them looking like the book describes, so I don't know why none of the previous adaptations could.
Chalamet is of course a bit too old to play 15-year-old Paul, but apart from that I think he's a good fit for the character. He's good at projecting thoughtfulness.
He didn't mention the quality of the film itself, and Villeneuve has never made a film that grossed as much worldwide as John Carter, crazy as that may sound. He doesn't really make smash hit movies and Dune comes with a lot of baggage so it's chances are not exactly sure-fire. It is looking good though, but it will be disappointing if it does turn out good and it flops or merely underwhelms and that puts the kabosh on any sequels. IIRC aren't they panning a TV series as well? Dunno if that will be tied into the film though.
Define "dud" if you mean well made movies, you're right but they haven't made massive money
Dune is more niche than star trek and look how that has flopped. Star wars in trouble, world of Warcraft was supposed to be a hit which it wasn't.
Gotta bad feeling about this, perhaps some movies should never be made.
A good well made film, loads of those in the world that make zero money.
Its what most people i assume will want from a film, rather than how much money it makes.

It prompted me to watch the 1984 version last night. Like a fine wine it gets better with every rewatch for me. A (marginally flawed) masterpiece that was cruelly maligned on release. Sad that even Lynch has disowned it.

At least the old version has some colour in it, crikey I thought we were moving past browns and darkly lit scenes.

The books were popular back in the day, are they still?
Dune is currently #2 and #3 on the Publishers Weeklyscience fiction bestseller list (in two different editions; if added together they would easily be #1). In June it topped the Washington Post bestseller list in the mass market paperback category.
I doubt that any of the sequels are selling anywhere near as many copies, and sales are no doubt boosted by the upcoming movie, but Dune itself remains extremely popular to this day.
