The Queen's Gambit Netflix

Binged this over a few days and loved every minute

Anja Taylor-Joy is amazing as a troubled chess champion, great cast, sound track and cinematography.

Hopefully the rest of the season is as good the first episode which I thought was excellent.

I Am up to episode 4 now, so 3 more to go.
It’s very captivating even if I can’t say why.
I was worried nasty things may happen but it’s not that sort of thing.

My other half also liked it, though he did say oh can we watch that piano thing now

Quite an achievement making something so captivating about chess

Just a combo of great cast and a story that keeps you rooting for a woman in a very male dominated world, the girl who played young Beth was also amazing.

Finished it after binging the last 3 episodes in one go.

Very good overall and, as others have said, making a great story from, what seems like, a game with limited general appeal was very well done.

Is it as good as Queen of Katwe?

I really enjoyed this but the ending was a bit disappointing.

Yeah, it felt like a bit of a weak ending to me as well.

I wondered if it was positioned to make you think they were her people now instead.

Watched this over the course of just over a week, a few weeks ago and loved it.
One of my favorites.

I will admit, after watching this and looking up the actress who played her, it seems odd that I find the character Beth far more attractive, personality and visually than the actual actress who plays the part.

Can't quite work that bit out

It's because she's a great actor and portrayed a character that you found attractive. Add to that the specific 60s style and makeup. You are not alone as my better half said to me that she was sad that we'd finished the series because she had fallen a little bit in love with Beth.
To be honest it's no different to finding a character ultra cool but finding the actor to be fairly dour. E.g. Han Solo and Harrison Ford.

There was something very mesmerising about the character and show/filming style. More than the actual plot

Though I was happy it was nice. No abuse by children’s hone/new father etc.

Indeed, her crisp makeup and flawless hair, together with her quiet and meek, yet confident in her ability personality just ticked my box's

The only aspect I had trouble believing really based upon this, was let's ignore everything and get blind drunk the very night before the tournament I've been building up to all my life.
Struggle to accept anyone that in control and level headed all her life would act so irrationally at the last critical moment just because someone suggested a drink.

The whole point is that she was never level headed and in control - she spent most of her life dependant on drink and drugs.

By the way, as I kind of mentioned before, if you like this track down the wonderful Queen Of Katwe, another story of a young female chess genius, but based on a true story. I think it’s on Disney+

Actually the one amazing thing I felt about the whole series was the lack of something I was waiting for, for at least half way to 3/4 of the way thru it.
In pretty much every single show, movie, you name it.
The standard plot I hate is, everything starts off great, then when it's looking all good, something bad happens, but at the end they work past this and we end happy.
I'm so sick as this generally is what they always do in a story.
I'll admit, I was waiting and waiting and waiting for this to happen.
for someone to ban her from playing chess anymore of something bad which she overcame at the very end.
It was just a pleasant surprise that the writers of this didn't feel the need to re-do that story method for once.
Well done on them for that.

Isn't that exactly what happened?

Not that I noticed.
All the way thru her youth I was expecting a "you are banned from having any access to chess" to come along, but instead it all seemed to go great, and she got encouragement from 3rd parties also.
Normally she'd be punished till perhaps she managed to escape from the evil school type of thing.

She was doing well and beating everyone, then she lost it in an alcoholic stupor, nearly didn't make it, then at the end she won to the adoration of everyone.
