Mafia 3 (PC/XB1/PS4)

Still one of my favourite series, gamescom announcement trailer

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SoiYrlXaPB4

Not sure about a more "modern" setting, new studio Hanger13 are developing.

I had to look and see if I played the previous one, that's how forgettable it was. Great looking but boring. Hopefully this will be better. The only games with a mob back story that I've enjoyed are the Darkness games. The Godfather was crap.

The gun play was good in the previous one.

The driving, not so much.

Mafia 2 was quite good, felt like a decent mobster story, there was missteps with the game design in some places iirc. Also the publishers took out a lot of side missions out and sold them as DLC iirc, thats why the open world was quite empty.

The cars handled like cars of that era probably handled

new trailer from a few days ago, out Oct 7th.

gameplay with commentary, can't find it without

wasn't sure about them going for a more open world format, and the intel vision thing doesn't really fit but is optional based on various things as far as I can tell.

overall it actually looks quite impressive and various hands on articles have been very positive.

That looks pretty damn good. Previous games had great narratives and some excellent cinematic action set pieces. The open world though was always underused. Provided some lovely colour and detail but with few reasons to see it all.

This twist on the nemesis system with your Henchman sounds interesting. Hope they pull it off. The combat looks pretty brutal.

Shame they're going for an open world setting, I'm getting fed up of everything needing to be a sandbox with endless collectibles and crap. What I quite liked about the first two was that they were linear stories dressed up as an open setting.

Doesn't look like it offers much new with regards to gameplay, but the location/setting look fresh & I'm always a sucker when it comes to sandbox games so sign me up!

I love a sandbox, you don't have to get the collectables and you can just drive straight to the next mission, why on earth would you want everything to be linear and hand holdy?

I thought the last one was open world or was it just cleverly done?
There is going to be some great late 60's muscle cars!

Generally speaking, you'll get a better/richer story experience if it's the primary focus of the development team. It's also more immersive if the game doesn't have stunt jumps and floating bits of glowing tat to collect lying around.

Mafia 2 was open world, iirc all the side stuff apart from some "collect posters" was sold as DLC. Sandbox design is fine as long as its done well, if its done as "check box" then its waste of resources by the developers. GTA games have always done the sandbox right (apart from those **** pigeons in 4)

Mafia 3 (PC/XB1/PS4)

Hmmm, OK. I never played the DLC in Mafia 2, so I only remember it being like the first game.

I did like the formula that Illusion set up for the original Mafia, as it heightened the cinematic style and storytelling. There have been a ridiculous amount of GTA clones since then, and it feels like most game serieses have become sandboxes just because it's the done thing these days, with no real focus, care or attention.

Didn't Mafia 2 span about 15 years or something, so the game world changed as the story progressed? If I remember rightly, different clothes, music and cars come and go. It would be tricky to do that in a true open world setting.

this spans one year, think they said 1968.

it's meant to be more focused as a sandbox, all side missions linked to the objective of taking over the city, no playing games etc.

Gamescom trailer

really liking the look of this now, latest footage seems to be focusing more on more story/characters which is what is what made the previous games so good

Was it the last game you collected vintage porn in, or did I just imagine that?
