They must have a lot of people to pay? I'm not saying they should be taking it, but why pick on Liverpool especially? Plenty of rich companies will be taking advantage and I'd guess football has been hit pretty hard.

True, Wetherspoons and British Airways to name but two.
As soon as the TV companies refuse to pay their next installments, the bottom will fall out of football

Yeh I just don't see why it's pick on a football club, are they even that rich? Do they make much profit? I'm guessing they have hundreds of staff unable to work, and pretty much zero income coming in. Not sure why the hate on football clubs.
How many football clubs have we seen go under in recent years?

It's not the clubs, it the multi-millionaire players

I agree with Salty, I think it's disgraceful for Prem clubs to be using the furlough scheme. It's intended to help businesses that can't afford to pay their staff through the period, funded by the tax payer. Whilst it's not legally wrong, it's morally wrong. There is more than enough money splashing around the top level of football to not need to take avantage of taxpayers money. I'm relieved Liverpool have backtracked as I think it's disgusting for any of the top level clubs to do it, especially when they have the money to keep paying players' huge salaries, who I think should be taking pay cuts whilst they're free to sit at home and not work to pay for the staff on a fraction of their salaries.

I’d agree with that. When the tv money disappears what’s left, especially for the smaller clubs?

Without the tv money, even some of the bigger clubs will struggle, the wages of the playing staff is prohibitive.
There's already rumblings from France and one of the tv companies that show the PL.

BA here at Gatwick have put their pilots on 50% pay but with 2 weeks unpaid in both April and May so surely that means only 25% pay.
Had on our local paper website one of their 747 pilots has started as a Tesco delivery driver, as BA doing no flights at Gatwick.

So is the turnover before the tv money? Is that player's wages, or all staff?
I presume they are per annum?

For what is seemingly such a well run club now it's amazing that no one pointed out the optics of it. I think it's something like a £310M total wage bill and the furlough scheme would've saved about £1M from non-playing staff so it just looks ridiculous - "We can afford £309M but that last million could bankrupt us!" I stand to be corrected, but I'm not sure that there's any difference for furloughed staff apart from the club being able to claim 80% of their wages, but it is taking the **** when there are employers across the country that actually need the scheme, and employees who need their employers to remain viable after this is over.
I don't agree with the scapegoating of PL clubs and players though, they are just an easy target for politicians to score easy points. There's actually millions of UK millionaires, no doubt including many government ministers such as Matt Hancock, or have I missed the report about them putting a cap on ministers salaries in this exceptional circumstance Does the sports minister need to be on furlough whilst there is no sport going on

So without tv money, Arsenal would make a £17m pa profit, Bournemouth an £86m loss.
Even Liverpool would "make" a £29m loss, even United would 'only' make a £90m profit.
If TV goes, this won't last long, unless the top players make a 'sacrifice'.
Never mind the likes of Bury, we will lose some top flight clubs.

It seems a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things, but if we're optimistic then at the moment - from an cash flow perspective at least - this current period might be seen as an early summer break. Assuming that the season isn't voided and the remaining fixtures are condensed and played behind closed doors at a later date then the losses will really amount to the gate receipts - which would be less significant for the likes of Bournemouth (who are more at risk) over Man Utd. But that may be offset because it's likely that all the games would then be televised by someone, so there might be more cash if Amazon or someone pay for those extra games.

I read a quote from one player (not sure if it was Rooney) where he said if we take a 30% pay cut the only beneficiaries will be the clubs? Surely most of that money would pay the staff they want to furlough?

I've seen arguments from players that they are directly helping by paying tax, which is technically true.
You are right though, if the clubs aren't paying millions a week to the players (who can't play anyway) then the club and the non playing staff will directly benefit

I think footballers and clubs are more in the public eye than the multi millionaire hedge fund managers etc that nobody knows or has ever heard about. The media are always full of stories about how much top players earn (even though a lot is probably untrue) and the amount of TV money washing around is always talked about when the contracts are renewed. There are often stories showing them driving cars that most people can never dream of owning and talk that someone has bought a mansion or racehorse that cost millions etc so everyone is aware of the cash these young players have....transfer and signing on fees, goal bonuses etc etc etc I think that makes them an easy target for the public and media.
Saying that, they must pay a huge amount of tax, although I expect some get around it and a lot do loads of charity work that’s never heard of.
I think some players argue that they are happy to have a wage reduction but they want control over where the money goes rather than just giving it back to the club....although doing that is likely to save the club in the long term if this does go on for a lot longer.

Hancock should be looking inwards at scum like Rees-Mogg, rather than picking on high profile soft targets like footballers
