Palace deserve the win.
Macheda has gone from a player with potential to a clumsy oaf. No chance he'll ever be a top class striker.

To be completely fair as well, that Ambrose strike deserved the match alone. Hardly the first time he has done that in his career too.

I think the impact he had on that Villa match, plus his important follow-up at Sunderland the following game, dumped expectation on him that he was never capable of fulfilling.
Most telling thing for me was his lack of goals on loan to Sampdoria last season - can't see him being in a United shirt next week (fingers crossed Diouf will go as well).

We've been awful, apart from a short spell after the second half, but if we end up out of the Carling Cup then I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep. Far bigger match coming up in a week.
Christ, some people only ever pop up on this thread in the bad times - compared to a lot of teams we really aren't doing too badly.
|
But it wasn't that weak a team on paper. That starting team should be good enough to put up a fair fight against half of the EPL for goodness sake. The problem was a majority of the starters are either having a poor season or have barely played for the first team.
The truth of the fact is we lost to a Championship side, at Old Trafford and Fergie deemed it unnecessary to put a 'wildcard' on the bench that could potentially turn it around if it went pear shaped.

Well played Palace - they deserved that.
United should have had plenty in hand with the side they started with, really. Diouf looked very ordinary - so one footed. But then given that he never should have been stuck out on the left wing, it made us so narrow. Macheda looking like he will never be the real deal either.
Our lack of movement in extra time (well, throughout the match) was really poor as well.
As already mentioned, the frailty of the Da Silva twins is getting worrying, too. And Fabio could easily have gone for that challenge in the first half where their winger was through on goal (IMHO)

Not an obvious goal-scoring though really, but certainly a foul and a booking - then the moment he did get booked for would've been interesting...

well played Palace, deserved everything they got!
I have no problem with Fergie putting out the b-team, it just hurts when we go out like this... saves another pounding from City in the next round!

Great goal from Palace. Palace deserved the win. Poor show from the United second/ third bunch (couldn't make up my mind which), if they are the future, God help us. Fergie I expect better than that.

Fryers impressed me when he came on, thought with a little encouragement he could have overlapped Diouf to create more from the left side. Looks a strong defensive full back. That cup ball certainly swerves a lot compared to the Nike PL ball! The movement on Ambrose's goal was unreal.

Fergie put out a full strength team in the 2nd leg of the cup against Manchester City at Old Trafford a couple of years ago?

He tends to strengthen as the competition goes on, but the team out tonight - while understrength - should've been able to do the job, however good Palace were.

That was purely because it was a semi against City. The team he put out in the QF against Spurs that year was far more like his normal Carling Cup teams.

...this is a pressure game, anything less than a 3-0 win for us makes it a bad weekend! Spurs up to 2nd... ...full strength team tonight please Fergie, never mind the mid-week game against Basel, it's not as though we've got much of a chance of winning that particular competition whilst Barca are still in it!!!
