I agree about the keeper. If we stick with him he'll be great. Disagree about a center half though. 2 from

Vidic
Jones
Ferdinand
Smalling
Evans

should be fine. Problem is that we we're short in other areas of the pitch and are playing our centre halves out of position. If money is to be spent I'd much prefer to see a dedicated right back brought in and Smalling to be used as centre back cover. Bring in two midfielders and put Jones in his proper position.

Fergie seems to be intent on turning Smalling and Jones into the next John O'Shea utility players.

Evra has talked to the BBC and hasn't said anything too controversial except I did notice this line...

"I play for Manchester United to play in the Champions League but some players dream of playing for United in any competition and you have to respect that."

My emphasis in bold - sounds like a swipe at the youngsters to me. Smalling will get hammered for his mistake for the second but the most disappointing of the youngsters was Young. No quality in anything he did other than to come back inside on his right foot and square the ball and slow down yet another attack.

First of all, Evra has no right to comment - he has been appalling for 18 months now. Again last night, I only saw him sprint when he was going forward, no appetite to get back at all.

Secondly, Young isn't a youngster, he is 25 / 26 isn't he? I agree that he was very disappointing - seems like another player that lacks belief in himself at times, in a similar way to how Carrick comes across (who we missed last night).

In retrospect, surprised Fletcher wasn't starting last night, just to have a proper CM in the middle of the park. Unsure whether he is fully recovered from his illnesses yet though, maybe that plays a part still.

I think it was over at RedCafe (or was it here?) that someone posted a stat on Carrick in Europe along the lines of that in group games he has started 19, W18, D1.

I can guage the lack of quality in central midfield at the moment partly by how many other teams in the Premier League have midfielders who would get into our midfield at the moment. Back in the Keane/Scholes/Butt/Beckham era I wouldn't have swapped them with hardly anyone.

I didn't think we played that badly! I've certainly seen worse this season from us. But the lack of a good creative midfielder and the woeful waste of possession told in the end. Rooney was totally isolated and had to work so deep to try and get involved. Nani looked our best outlet.

The jury is still out on De Gea. From what I've seen this season, Lindegaard looks more comfortable in goal at the moment. De Gea has some moments of brilliance, but he seems to lack a bit of belief in himself.

Of course we won't buy in January, which is a scandal. And we'll limp on to the end of the season. The bench told the story last night - there was no 'game changers' on there.

Evans more at fault for the goal for me than Smalling - he should have headed it clear before it got to the back post. It looked like he watched it go past him.

Anyway, roll on Europa League. There is no pleasure being in it, but we might as well try and win it.

Come February I'm sure Fergie will put a positive spin on this.

It's not ideal to be here but we'll take the competition seriously, there's no doubt about that.

It's amazing that a club as big as this one has never won this competition

It will be good experience for the younger players.

Etc.

When/If we lose to Wolves on the weekend, Spurs could potentially go four points above if they win their game in hand.

On paper it should be an easy win, but Wolves always come out fighting. They beat us last season when we were playing much better football than we are right now:

But we're not going to lose. It will be a piece of cake, mark my words.

Vidic appears to have done his cruciate according to his agent.

Silvano Martina, one of the defender's representatives, said: "...unfortunately he has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament."

Not heard of many cruciate ligament injuries for a while and then we get 2 massive players picking one up within a week

I wonder if this will force fergies hand in the transfer market in January , will he suddenly find "value" in it ?

dunno, wonder how it will affect his supposed plans to sell Vidic at the end of the season?

Has Blanc retired now?

I'm happy enough with Jones or Smalling at centre back, at least one big centre mid (a 2nd as well if possible ) would be more beneficial signings in my opinion.

If there are no centre midfield signings in January, then the rest of the season is going to be a frustrating mess. I'm preparing myself for the worst

Yes the answer is to sign a midfielder and put Jones, Smalling and Ferdinand on standby for CB. Does playing in the Champions League exempt you from playing for another club in the Europa League if we sign someone in January?

I have no idea how he is doing at City, but letting Hargreaves go if he was able to play a few games in the same year as Scholes retiring and not replacing them is looking like a big mistake. We're now relying on Gibson, a not-as-good-as-he-was Fletcher and Carrick to carry the team. Jones, whilst good in midfield, is at his best at CB.

i think any European competition invalidates you from the others...
