CGI Jaws

Its hard to beat perfection; but if Spielberg would re-release Jaws with a latest CGI technology shark (I think on set, Spielberg referred to the shark as the giant turd) he could surpass his masterpiece?
Quite a small project considering the shark is only seen a little.

No, it's becoming clear now that the old masters of cinema were limited by techology and budget and due to that the films were better. If they all the tech from the get go then all the great films of the 80's would have had nothing but souless wizz-bang affairs we have today

Redoing cgi on old films is the sign of a director who has run out of ideas and is trying to milk the fans. Spielberg seems to be busy enough on new projects. Roll on Star Wars with new 3D cgi

leave Jaws alone

We had Deep Blue Sea already and leave the total CGI to the upcoming MEG (if it ever gets greenlit!)

No, because there's a lot more to Jaws than the shark FX (which are terrific anyway). Jaws is a masterpiece of suspense simply because of how little we see the beastie (and great acting, scripting - y'know, the stuff that really matters!).

Lucas is not alone in this, Spielberg was guilty with the 20th anniversary version of E.T but I hope he has learnt his lesson. Though we did get both versions on DVD so at least we got the choice.

Films are products of there time and I don't think you should go back.

I was thinking about it the other day as I was watching Avatar 3D. Meg in 3D would own if done right. Let's get Blomkamp on it!

I'm sure I read a quote from Spielberg recently that if he had today's CGI at his disposal then, the shark would have been onscreen four times as much, but that would have made the film a quarter as suspenseful/scary.

Actually, i have to be honest, apart from the 'han shooting second' and the Jabba scenes, i thought it was much better. If he left those 2 scenes out it would have been much much better recieved

I too, many moons ago, was a fan of using CGI to fix the shark....but after thinking carefully about the legacy of Jaws and more importantly BRUCE, you would be tinkering with a piece of Jaws folklore ....ala Bruce the mechanical shark that would not work...thus the reason for Speilberg having to rely on damn good editing and suspense!

Perhaps CGI could be used, but it would need to be used very cautiously....and indeed carefully...

I'm not always against sprucing up effects for a home video release, but on the whole I like that special effects of a past decades reflect the technology of their time. They may not always look realistic, but aged effects acquire a certain charm. Before CGI there was a sense of mystery to special effects because there were so many ways of doing them, that you had to figure out how it was done. I like to keep that alive when I watch an old film instead to retroactively change all the effects in older films and paste CGI all over them.

That said, if CGI is done with subtlety and sensitivity as was applied to the Blade Runner - The Final Cut, then I don't mind. So while I wouldn't want the shark to be completely replaced, if they got rid of the obvious hinged gap on its lower jaw, then that would be fine by me. On the other hand, I won't enjoy the film any less if it stays the same.

Bring it on on Blu-ray already...

Some of the matte paintings have been replaced with digital versions for the Indiana Jones trilogy in HD.
