I didn't think you needed an aerial for Freesat? You just use the cable you would normally plug into the sky box?
Something like this would be fine with no need for an aerial:

Yep, normal Sky dish and cable works fine. We did that very thing - had Sky, cancelled it, bought the Humax Freesat/Freetime box, sold the Sky one on eBay.
Wife got used to new menus, etc in no time. We literally never missed Sky.
We've moved since and no dish but have the Humax YouView box instead with a loft aerial. Again, don't miss Sky at all but, similarly, we hardly watched anything on subscription channels anyway.

I dropped down to the Variety pack from Family the other day.
HD: I won't miss it, watching stuff in the living room is such a compromise anyway that fewer pixels won't make that much difference. Besides, it is only 1080i and some channels (like Fox) don't look any different. The Mrs rarely watches anything in HD as she doesn't drill down to the HD options. If they automatically override the SD channels she would but with local programming mucking it all up (oh, why isn't Channel 4 HD on 104, is there a local Ch4?) she doesn't bother.
Boxed Sets on Demand: Pain in the arse. I got 3/4 of the way through The Wire and they took it off. Never again.
3D: Don't have it, don't want it.
They tried to do a 'deal' where I would only pay an extra 50p a month for six months and I lost my rag and pointed out that I would not subsidise their football overheads.

I did alright. Got mine down from £56 (Family and Movies I think) to just below £30. And on a rolling one month contract. Price drop guaranteed for a year and no price increase.

they wouldn't offer me anything when i called up to 'complain about the price rise and try to reduce my bill' - all they suggested was to drop from the variety bundle to the most basic one, saving a few quid. apparently i already had some "anti price rise discount" applied to my account, which i lost with the change so it wasn't the full saving. (i should say i never threatened to cancel)

Might be worth cancelling the TV as within 30 days I was getting 50% deals and they even went upto 60% off with one email. They still arrive in the post at least every 2 weeks.

Yes but it sounds like you were prepared to cancel and have done so.
I genuinely think they tailor the offers and can see what you watch. When the VM girl was spewing all the advantages she seemed to know that I never watched BT Sports. However they also knew that based on where I lived and how much streaming I did, I was stuck with VM for my BB.
So if you watch GOT religously and a load of Atlantic stuff, and you've been a customer for years, are you really going to cancel it?
Whereas if you've been there 12 months, there is a fairly good chance you would up sticks and go.

I'd love to try and haggle over something but I'm locked down due to me still having F1 free with HD rather than sports and if I change anything I'll lose it.

I called up Sky recently told them I was thinking of leaving and moving to Virgin as it was cheaper for me. They effectively price-matched the VM Big Kahuna XL bundle for 10 months. I'm currently paying £56 and they lowered it to £50 saving £6 but with the new price rise coming so it'll be saving of £10 a month. I was hoping for a bigger discount but no dice.
(I'm on the Family & HD bundle plus Phone and Broadband).

I cancelled Sky about 18 months ago as it was getting too pricey - can't say I'd missed it all that much, but my Mrs did.
I've just recently moved house & they called up yesterday offering the HD Family Pack & Sports for £20 a month on a 12 month contract. Seemed like a reasonable deal.

I recently threatened to cancel and they ended up dropping my bill from £40 a month to £17. Same package.
I was quite prepared to leave though, and will if they won't keep it at that in a years time. I refuse to subsidise other people's sky sports.

It's the best approach - in a years time I'll just bin it off if there are no decent discounts forthcoming

Yeah, never whinge about the price. Just cancel it. They will keep tempting you then. Worst case, let it lapse. What I particularly liked this time was the rolling contract offer. Better than a cheaper deal in some ways.
The main issue is that, if you value HD box sets and movies on demand, going to BT vision is just a bit rubbish. Yes, it's cheaper. But it's just not as good.

How do you go about getting a price drop when you can't live without Sky Sports?!! And I can't be doing with SD either so need it all in HD.
I watch football, F1 and NFL on a regular basis. Plus golf, darts and occasionally pool. I can't exactly blag that I don't watch it enough!!

Can't you get much of the Sport if you just get NowTV and pay the tenner a month ?

Yeah NowTV is too expensive.
Not in a cable area either, much to my annoyance.
