[Blu Ray] Hitchcock HD Thread
Just saw that Universal have released Psycho and the print looks lovely... and it got me thinking - anyone seen any Hitchcock in HD?
Wasn't Psycho shown is the US in HD?
Oh, imagine The Birds, or Rear Window in HD

I haven't but would love to get Psycho and Rear Window in HD. I've never been a massive fan of the rest of his stuff to be honest though.

Several of the Universal owned films were shown in HD on the US HDNet TV channel last year. You can see various screengrabs at these links (note that some are taken from recompressed 720p versions of the full HD broadcasts):

Some of the films fair better than others -- Psycho and Vertigo look especially good, whilst Frenzy and Family Plot less so.
My hunch is that Universal prepared HD transfers in 2004/2005 as part of their last round of digital restoration work on Hitchcock's films. It was these restored transfers that were used for the US "Masterpiece Collection" set.
The first HD release is likely to be "North by Northwest" next year, as MGM are busy preparing a 50th anniversary edition.

Not doubting you, but I can't see The Birds. I can however see Torn Curtain in HD in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

My mistake. The Birds is actually on Friday showing on Sky Movies Classics - annoyingly that channel isn't in HD

I'd love to see a Sky Classics HD channel. I watched A Touch of Evil in HD the other night and it looked great! I just wish Sky would show more like that.

Just quoting John Hodson...
Quote:
Nothing totally concrete, but HMV carrying a title as a 'pre-release' (i.e. listed, but with no release date) usually means they've been told it's coming. And HMV is carrying the following Hitchcock Paramount/Warner/Universal/Granada Int. held titles as Blu-ray 'pre-releases':
The Birds
Torn Curtain
Family Plot
Frenzy
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Marnie
Mr and Mrs Smith
Psycho
Rear Window
Rope
Saboteur
Shadow of a Doubt
Topaz
The Trouble With Harry
Vertigo
To Catch a Thief
North by Northwest
Strangers on a Train
Secret Agent
The 39 Steps

I would start out with four or five essentials and buy then buy rest over time.

I'd be keen to have the favourites of mine that will benefit from HD most first. The older and B&W films still don't look too bad in their SD incarnations.
Vertigo
Rear Window
North by Northwest
The Birds
Marnie (controversial choice I know, but a personal favourite)
The Birds and Marnie look especially ropey on SD, so I'd like to see good restorations of those two.
