Would it be racist to make a new cowboy and indian film?

There never seem to be new Westerns where the white men are fighting the Indians?

Would thi s eb seen as racist to make such a film in the 21st century?

Not racist, just very outdated.

I doubt it would be racist.

I think we're in dire need of some new Westerns.

The Lonesome Dove spin offs feature some rather barbaric Indian Tribes. (Streets of Laredo, and in particular Dead Man's Walk. Comanche Moon is out soon and that promises the same). They're not in the slightest bit racist.

Can't see why it would be seen as any more racist than say Black Hawk Down and they'd definitely be a market for a new Western considering the Eastwood classics still take pride of place in many peoples dvd collections.

I think Cowboys fighting Ghosts would be a far more interesting concept.

Would it be racist if they fought Indian ghosts though?

I don't think so. I didn't hear The Last Of The Mohicans described as racist. The only racist westerns were the ones that implied all Indians were savages by definition. There were plenty of more thoughtful ones that still had Indian villains.

What was that recent one with Cate Blanchet? The indians in that were pretty vicious.

Cowboy is probably sexist.

Should be "cow person" or "bovine management technician" or something.....

"Hey, Wanna play bovine management technicians of non specified gender and indigenous pre-colonisation aboriginal populaces"

Doesn't really sound the same does it?

That's like asking if Flags of our Fathers / Letters from Iwo Jima is racist... but I guess they covered both bases in that instance.

I'm guessing Native Americans wouldn't care less as long as they were portrayed historically accurately.

It's not like they have an axe to grind...

I'd go and see it! I haven't seen a Western at the cinema since Unforgiven. I like 'em!

Modern America is a lot more sensitive to race issues than it was in the 1950's heyday of the western. Any film featuring Cowboys in conflict with Native Americans made these days would have to bend over backwards to show Native Americans in a realistic and historically accurate way. Showing them as whooping savages would cause a political outcry and rightly so.
