Matt Brown has reviewed the R2 disc for Total DVD and comes to some different conclusions regarding the technical issues of sound and print transfer. The overall film is good and the sound is outstanding, but does the print live up to reference standards, we don't think so. Read our analysis of the disc Here

...nice to see an actual review of the disc itself. Far more useful than 65 pages discussing the film, and a paragraph each for the technical side of things.

I've lost of the amount of times I've read DVD Times reviews - and particularly those by Mike Sutton - and come away entertained, enlightened and better informed (on a variety of issues, not least cinematic). DVD Times has never made any secret about the fact that they concentrate on film, rather than disc, reviews.

I'll take '65 pages' of knowledgible, well written, passionate and incisive critique any time of the day. As far as I'm concerned - and Mike's review here is a good example - they're a pleasure to read.

No problem.

I just prefer the style of review that Matt's takes, outlining the specifics of the disc and such-like, but I appreciate others want to read up on the film too.

Having now read Mike's review, it too is a fine read - good work!

I've sampled the soundtrack on the R2 release, albeit breifly, and I was absolutly blown away. Chris has looked through the whole set now and was amazed at the quality throughout...... Read on:

so what is the opening scene like when the ship emerges from the fog to attack the ship. Am i right in thinking this sequence suffers from pixelation?

resurrecting an old thread.

does anyone have the new edition thats out and is it worth getting over the previous versions? (in terms of video and audio quality)?

The definitive edition releases are (with the exception of Fight Club and Mr & Mrs Smith) just repackaged re-releases, so disc content should be identical.

annoying how the back states best ever dvd sound and pic release, etc...

Are you certain? Surely that's false advertising?

I'm 99% certain. Obviously there's a slim chance Fox might go to the bother of re-encoding the audio/video of all their major Special Edition releases but everything I've seen about these releases suggests they are just repackaged, repriced versions of existing 2-Disc Special Editions (which in most cases were already pretty good).

They're not claiming "remastered, restored" or anything on their marketing, merely stating these offer the best picture and sound quality (which they'd say about all their releases).

Yes. I have Kingdom of Heaven DC Definitive Edition which is the four disc version before repackaged.

Other DVD companies do it all the time.
