Apparently we've had a £6m bid accepted for Pennant. Thoughts?

I can understand it more if you live outside of Liverpool just to avoid a little bit of potential bother

My opinion is that is isn't quite up to Liverpool standards (in the same was as he wasn't quite up to Arsenal standards) but he'll do until we can get someone else. We can't go on wedging in players from other positions although I think Anderson may be as good an option as Pennant.
Skysports say we've offered 3.5m and Birmingham have a valuation on him of 6m - if he does sign I think the fee will be closer to £5m.

Other than (i) it only being a story in the Mirror and (ii) Birmingham saying it wasn't true this morning you mean

Only that we are paying £3m more than we need to, but thats generally a part of our transfer policy so no surprise there
Decent squad player, but I would still prefer Gerrard there.

From Birmingham
Quote:
following is a statement issued today (Tuesday) by Birmingham City Football Club:
Contrary to reports in today's media, Birmingham City Football Club has not agreed a fee with Liverpool FC for Jermaine Pennant.
The two clubs have talked on a couple of occasions but Birmingham City and Liverpool Football Club are a long way off in their respective valuations of the player.
Until Birmingham's valuation is met, the Club will not even consider a move for Pennant.
As Birmingham City have continually stated, they are not looking to sell any of their best players.

pennant hasnt shown to be close to £6m worth.. times i saw him last year against us he looked ordinary at best and that is the level he has to prove himself capable of playing against. imho he wont be first choice unless injuries/suspensions force Rafa to change personnel.

birmingham have to pay 25 % of the sell on fee for pennant to arsenal hence them jacking the price up can't believe we'll go to 6 million for a squad player surely i'd sooner offer chelski 10-12 mill for wright-phillips

It seems a lot to me asI can't believe he'd be more than a squad player either. If we're going to be getting another striker as well I'd presume Rafa's wanting to use 4-4-2 more than 3-5-1, which would make a optimal central midfield of Xabi and Momo with Gerrard on the right. If Pennant's going to play, then it would mean dropping one of those three in favour of him

They wouldn't sell to us for £30m - they have the power of deciding where there players go to it seems. They certainly won't sell to domestic rivals any player that could strengthen them significantly as SWP would.

Is Joaquin still a £18mm player or has his stock dropped?
If so, a cheeky £10mm bid to Real Betis might not go amiss.

Which makes it even stranger that they offered us Duff...

Not according to Liverpool they didn't.
I am sure I read somewhere last night that Liverpool have denied ever being interested / making a bid for Duff before Newcastle signed him.

Sure, really reckon Gerrard, Momo and Xabi are going to miss about 25% of our games each to accomodate the likes of Zenden, Kewell, Diao, Pennant and whoever else we might still have on our books

The Echo said Chelsea offered him to us and we weren't interested.
Which makes all of the stories Sky Sports News keep showing about us missing out even more bizarre.

Well Duff mentioned us in his comments about joining Newcastle saying his people in Ireland will think he is mad for not joining Liverpool. That implies it was an option or that he considered it. The Liverpool denial could be us just saving face after losing out to Newcastle.

Which following john316 logic would mean Chelsea dont consider Liverpool to be domestic rivals.

But as I said on the Newcastle thread .... Liverpool buying Duff to play on the left wouldn't significantly improve their squad and so Chelsea would probably have no problems selling.
Liverpool buying SWP to play on the right on the other hand .... is another matter entirely and will never happen (not until he's already playing for someone else that is).
