Saw this as well.

Great film, but wouldn't put it as no.1 film of our time. If aliens came to visit us, and you had to show them a film we, as Earthlings, had made, I would hope it wouldn't be Fight Club!

I would pick something like It's a Wonderful Life.

Maybe A Matter of Life and Death.

By 'Our Time', they were actually referring to the 10 years since the mag launched. It's an anniversary issue.

As 'Best Films of the Last Ten Years' go, I don't think its a bad choice at all. It always pops into my head as one of the best films of recent times when someone asks me

I'd totally agree. I also agree with the reasons why other films, just didn't make it.

I certainly would say Return of the King is one of my favourite (if not THE favourite) film of my time.

But Fight Club certainly is a film that had an affect on me, and changed the way I dealt with my life.

I couldn't have watched it at a better time.

funnily enough, I became a projectionist within 12 months of watching it, and only recently I thought that it was a bit weird that I got the same job as Tyler. (I have also been a waiter...)

i'd have probably gone with american beauty as the greatest of the last ten years, maybe with a little thought something else would have come to mind, but i doubt however hard i thought fight club would be outside the top 5.
what was the rest of the 10?
i'd like to see the likes of the big lebowski and fear and loathing in las vegas, maybe even rushmore, on the list, but comedies don't usually get near 'greatest' lists.

Not only do I think Fight Club isn't the best film of the last decade, I don't even think it's the best film Fincher has made in the last ten years. If Se7en and Fight Club were engaged in a ruthless, no-holds-barred scrap, it's Fight Club that would be left with the bloody nose.

It's Fargo for me. The script is damn near perfect. So well observed, the characters so believable. And each actor gives the performance of his/her career. I mean, only the Coen brothers can flout genre rules in this way. Instead of a tough, rule breaking cop, we have a heavily pregnant, law-abiding police woman. And there isn't an unnecessary or flabby scene in the whole movie -- they all help define the characters and their relationships. Ok, I change my mind, it IS perfect.

I also loved American Beauty when it first came out, but the more I see it, the more cartoony and exaggerated it seems. I'm not surprised the writer has worked on sitcoms. (We have the next door neighbour, the dour, homophobic, abusive army man, with his gun collection and Nazi memorabilia -- Do you think he's supposed to be the bad guy, huh?)

I think that there have been better films (I was never drawn into the Fight Club fanboy arena - it was a well directed and written film but just lacked something). I think that films lie those mentioned above by stefmcd and Mr Majestik are also very good choices (especially Toy Story for its effect on Animation which has produced some of the best and biggest hits of the last few years (Shrek, Incredibles etc). I think that the LOTR trilogy were probably some of the most gripping films of recent, and I was a huge fan of Se7en, Fargo, Usual Suspects and LA Confidential in that genre and The Matrix gave way to a whole new style of action movies (although best not to mention the sequels )

Apart from the fact that Fincher completely messes up Palahniuk's ending from the novel (and ends up endorsing what Palahniuk's trying to question), I quite like it.

I wouldn't put it up on some pedestal as the Holy of Holies, though.

Ummm. Probably Toy Story, just (it's ten years old this year). If not that, then either Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or The Sixth Sense....

Oh my god... thinking about it, Charlie's Angels probably has alot to answer for too.

Hmmm, the title "Most Influential Film" isn't necessarily a good thing.

Scream -- Refreshed Hollywood's love affair with dumb slasher flicks.

There's Something About Mary -- The film responsible for a lot of dumb "gross-out" comedies.

Mission Impossible -- Taught many a Hollywood hack that there was money to be made from rehashing old TV shows.

Gladiator -- Inspired a fresh batch of epic movies.

Ali -- Biopics are the way to go, folks.

I would offer La Haine as another example of an influential movie in the last ten years.
Blisteringly relative even 9 years on.
