2Mbps broadband -- £14.99/month (1GB/month, £1.75/GB after that), inc. 1 month no cap

Eclipse have launched a new PAYG-style 2Mbps broadband service for £14.99/month:

This includes 1GB of use, with every extra GB charged at £1.75 (you can set a monthly budget that you can't go over). As far as I can tell, you get a reduced speed connection for the rest of the month rather than lose the service ("If you hit your monthly budget you can either temporarily increase your budget or regrade to an unlimited service free of charge. If you do neither of these then your service speed will be restricted until the following month.") -- no indication of what that speed is though (256Kbps I assume, as they state that if you can't get a 2Mbps connection they provide either a 1Mbps or 512Kbps one).

Also, if you sign up before 31/12 then you get one month with no useage cap at all.

Connection is £58.75, migration from another broadband provider is £12.93

Not a great deal for download fiends but looks good for the occasional user who wants speedy access when they do use it. Can't vouch for them personally but a colleague uses them for broadband and he's pretty pleased so far.

256Mps is the same as 256Kbps right?

Clearly I know technically it's not but these Kbps and Mbps get all mixed up. So I'm wondering if it's the same as half of standard BB.

Which is pretty slow IMO + 1Gb is nothing today.

I'm now with EFH BB for £11.74 for 512Kbps monthly, which is far simpler.

Yes, I meant 256Kbps -- don't know that for certain though, I'm just assuming (given that you may end up on a 512Kbps connection if you can't get 1Mbps or 2Mbps). Might be a good idea to check with them first if you're interested.

The way I read it is this: £14.99 for the first gigabyte, then £1.75 for each giagabyte or part, with the sky the limit (well, whatever 2Mb/s is over a month). If you want, you can set a limit. If you don't want, don't set a limt.

the way i read it as follows

14.99 for a 2mb line
you can download 1GB of data after that every GB you download is £1.75 so it depends on howmuch you use the line. It could work out expensive.

....afaik that's fairly standard blurb isn't it?

1.75 per extra gig is damned expensive. Even a gig a day will cost you over an extra 50 quid per month - ontop of your 15 quid. Obviously this is only designed for users who may occassionally download more than a gig. Any more than that you may as well go with Tesco or similar, even if they're only 512.

2mb connection with a 1gb/month limit - what's the point? 2mb is not worth bothering with for general surfing, and by definition anything other than this that takes advantage of that bandwidth will exceed 1GB easily.

Well looks a good deal to me 2mb for £15 . I am double that with bt for 1mb. And will allow me the occasional big download .

If your connection is stopped after you hit the 1GB cap then I agree, but if it just gets limited to 256Kbps then it still looks like a good deal to me. You're paying less per month for it than Tiscali charge for their 256Kbps service (which by its definition is aimed at the occasional surfer); if you don't exceed 1GB then you're getting a connection that's 8*faster for £3/month less, and if you do then you're getting the same speed for £3/month less but with an extra speed boost at the start of the month

Plus don't forget that you get one month uncapped if you sign up before 31/12; I assume it's the first month, so you can download all the Linux distributions you want and get it out of your system before they start limiting you...
