Wrong forum for TV - it's the 1975 Aldrich/Reynolds/Deneuve gloomfest.

Pathe appear to be responsible for this screwup - they're normally OK with OARs.

Paramount have R1 rights so hopefully they'll do it properly one day.

Hustle was filmed hardmatted into 1.85:1 - when I saw it on the BBC years ago, they showed it with all the matting on display (i.e. full frame). This was back in the days when they always panned-and-scanned Scope movies but showed hard-matted 1.85:1 films letterboxed (other examples being All The President's Men and Smile).

So this may be open-matte, which is in effect 1.85:1 non-anamorphic. Anamorphic would of course be better, but it may not be all bad news.

I have a good feeling about this - one of my favourite films. Surely they wouldn't cock it up? Reynold's second best after Deliverance.

When I last saw it on the BBC I'm pretty sure the opening credits were 1.85 letterboxed and then once the film began it went to 1.33. If it was open matte rather than P+S, I can't beleve the credits would have been letterboxed. Still, maybe the DVD will be different but at RRP �5.99 it smacks of a minimum effort "chuck something out on the cheap and see if it earns us a couple of quid" type release.

What label is publishing this? Quite a few of Aldrich's films have been published by very cheap publishers - I have 'The Grissom GAng' - which IIRC is w/s non anamorphic. I think it may be a prism release.

The showing I caught was in the 1980s and the BBC's policy towards widescreen films has changed since then. Back when I saw it they removed some F-words from the dialogue.

Not many films are hardmatted into 1.85:1 these days because if you show it full-frame you get thick black bars top and bottom. Sounds like the showing you caught blew up the picture area to fill a 4:3 TV set, which would have cropped the sides.

In the fantasy world which I occasionally inhabit, someone at pathe read this thread and decided against putting out a piece of junk. Instead they're making us a nice shiny spotless anamorphic transfer. In my fantasy world it will be released a week or two before Christmas along with Point Blank and Electra Glide In Blue.

I don't think the Aldrich/Reynolds/Deneuve Hustle was ever coming out - Pathe did release this

under the same catalogue number on the same day. Someone at Pathe probably looked up Hustle on imdb, got the wrong film and sent dodgy details out to all the e-tailers.

The Burt Reynolds Hustle is Paramount I think.
