well as we've broken the 1000-post barrier in the other thread I figured I'd get this up (pending AlanB locking t'other one)

Stop arguing so much and then you will not need a new thread so often, all the other supporters threads last much longer.

We were looking as it was very public that we were after the two players I mentioned plus Rafa went on record saying he would look to bring new faces in during this window.

Man Utd got the player they wanted and might as well for their other long term target (Hargreaves) - they may yet sign Bale too.

Chelsea are obviously in some kind of internal turmoil - they were after Tal Ben Haim but refused to pay an extra million IIRC - while I agree to a certain degree with their stance on being overcharged it's not like a million is much to them, they've overpaid for lots of their players already and they really do need the cover in defence IMO.

Arsenal said quite a while ago that they weren't looking to buy - only recent injuries have made them make a last minute rethink but it's not like they have tried to buy and failed.

It looks like they takeover money was the key to us spending anything much in this window - lets hope the necessary people are already putting irons in the fire for our transfer targets for next season...

True. I thought it was a game - hit that "submit" button fastest roughly 30 days after the last round of indepth "discussion" of what we discussed last-thread-but-one

We have the best CH in the country at the moment in the form of Essien

Carvalho is class too, and with JT on the mend, it would have been a waste of time signing Haim.

As a West Ham fan it pains me to post it ......

Quote:
From the Daily Mail ......
Liverpool have announced the signing of Javier Mascherano from West Ham in an 18-month loan deal that has bent football's rules.

Mascherano, who was deemed not good enough for West Ham's relegation battle by Alan Curbishley, will be thrust into Liverpool's Champions League campaign instead.

The signing is reward for Liverpool's patience. They hoped to sign the Argentine midfield powerhouse, 22, at the start of the transfer window, but have had to wait while lawyers have thrashed out a deal with UEFA and FIFA, because players aren't supposed to move clubs twice in a season. Mascherano has already played for Corinthians, as well as West Ham.

The authorities finally agreed to cave in on the transfer and it will be announced tomorrow, on the final day of the transfer window. Rafa Benitez last night saluted the signing. "We have an agreement to take him on loan for 18 months then we have an option to sign him permanently.

"He is a top class player and played at the top level at the World Cup. We were monitoring him when he was with River Plate. The only question is whether he can play to his level in England, but I know he can play a lot better than he did at West Ham. We don't have another holding midfielder and this is a crucial time for us. We will play against West Ham, Everton, Newcastle, Sheffield United and Barcelona twice."

Mascherano made only three Premiership starts with West Ham, and seven appearances altogether. Benitez added: "Maybe Liverpool can be a better option for him because we can speak in Spanish to him and we play a different style of football that suits him better. Corinthians and River Plate are top sides in their countries and he is used to winning trophies. I think he will have more possibilities with us."

Benitez also explained why he expected to get his man. "There is a big difference between the law and the rules," he said. "A worker cannot be stopped working. That's the law in the European Community. Then there are the rules, which can change depending on your country or continent. There are players in the world now who have played for three or four clubs in a season.

"The rules are one thing, but the law is another. Nobody can stop people moving to other jobs. They have freedom and they need to work. The law is more important than the rules." Liverpool are moving to secure the long-term future of a number of their top men because of a new regulation giving a player the right to buy out his contract when it entered the last two years.

Benitez confirmed that Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher would be offered new deals in the summer along with Spanish pair Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia.
I hope you see more of him then we did ...... obviously something dodgy our end for never playing him. To return the favour, if you could just give us the 3 points tomorrow night

Hopefully he will turn out to be a decent catch. Our last minute signing of the transfer window last January although was a brilliant piece of press he didn't exactly set the world in fire.

What I dont get is why is it a loan for 18 months....... dont get that at all. Even, as is probable, we (West Ham) dont own the player at all then surely it would be a loan till the end of the season when Liverpool could then buy the player from MSI. But 18 months??!?? unless Liverpool have signed their own dodgy deal???
Complete mess and exactly why no one but a club should own a player.

If Mascherano settles and finds form then he's a far better option as a holding midfeilder than either Sissoko or Alonso.

Think it's a good move to be honest.

Sissoko whilst being awesome in the prem can attract fouls in Europe a lot. Having a another class holding midfielder is no bad thing.

Zenden is not good enough cover in there.

And it's only a loan, so no loss there.

Well, I don't know enough about him to really comment - so I am glad to hear your comments. Is he REALLY better than Alonso? From what I understand, Mascherano, Alonso, and Sissoko will be competing for one position.

If all three of them are quality, then surely one of them will get ****** off and want to leave?

Sissoko isn't a holding midfielder, which Rafa himself highlighted by saying that Alonso is the only holding midfielder in the squad.
