Hellraiser help wanted!

Okay guys, i read the novel The Hellbound Heart and enjoyed the movie Hellraiser. Then i getmy mitts on a copy of Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 on VHS (it was 50p at a car boot sale, okay?) and hated it due to the BBFC ripping 5 minutes out of it.

So. I want to get the Hellraiser 1+2 R1 SE box set, but can't find it ANYWHERE. Suggestions?

Oh, and i want to know your opinions on the other films in the sequence before i either buy or rent 'em.

The R1 Anchor Bay tin with both Hellraiser 1 and 2 was a numbered limited edition thing tht has now been out for a few years, so I don't doubt it'd be near impossible to find one new, but they do seem to crop up semi regularly in the DVD Classified Adverts forum right here in these very forums.

Due to it's relative scarcity, don't expect to get it right cheap, but most if not everyone selling on here knows the score in regards to prices, so it'll be fairly priced for what it is.

You can pick these up for around �25 as said on this forum or eBay. You could also try the AVforums.com forums, which are more about the AV hardware side of things (I got a mint H1/H2 tin from there for a friend of mine). It's a cracking release.

Hellraiser III is no way as good as I or II - plus the only copy I have of III is the R2 release in a 4:3 format

I still needed it though to replace my old VHS - and of course for the beautiful Terry Farrell

I see my R1 THX versions of I and II are out of print now.

I liked Hellraiser 5: Inferno, even though many people seem to hate it. Pinhead is hardly in it, but then that didn't spoil it for me.

I thought Hellraiser 3 was excellent fun and a much better piece of direction than the dire Hellbound, but that's very much a minority opinion. Oddly enough, it wasn't at the time. Hellbound received a right slating from both horror fans and mainstream critics on release and Hellraiser 3 got pretty decent reviews.

I agree with Mike. Hellbound was just abysmal and Hellraiser 3 is quite entertaining if taken on it's own terms. I just wished they'd bring out a decent version of it, instead of the sub-VHS quality 4:3 version that's out here.

hellraiser 3 is dire. The turned Pinhead into a central character and into some movie maniac, i think the brief for hellraiser 3 was 'lets make a rival for freddy, jason and michael'.

The cenobite design is just abysmal. CD throwing cenobite and camera cenobite, what the hell were they thunking? its just a nasty nasty film.

Hellbound is a much creepier film, Chris Young's score is brilliant, some of the colours used and lighting is wonderful.

The effects haven't dated well but its a far superior film to Hellraiser 3.

number 4 is an enjoyble romp and i too enjoyed 5 (even though it is quite different from the first 4) still waiting on 6 though

I enjoyed 3, actually, despite the fact that it's pure popcorn compared to the rest of the series I got a lot of fun out of it. I also have a soft spot for Hellbound as well because it has a few memorable scenes and doesn't shy away from the gore.

Number 4 was complete shash, though. Blecht! However 5 and 6 weren't too bad and are probably a damn sight more faithful to the original film than most of the sequels. Roll on Deadworld and Deader!

The original is a Horror classic and number 2 follows on the story well.

3 is more of a Pinhead on the rampage movie,that while enjoyable enough seems too "Hollywood" for me.

4 always gets a slating and had horrible production trouble but I like it

5 is the worst in the series IMHO.Nothing to do with the fact that Pinhead is hardly in it,it just didn't "grab" me like the other ones.

I have the script for 7 and it is quite disturbing in places !! Hopefully much of what is on the page will be put onto the screen in an effective way.

I also have the script (and was lucky enough to be in) 8. People have already likened it to "Fear Dot Com" from the story line that has been leaked out but I can guarantee that it will be a FAR better movie than that !!The movies budget prohibits a lot of what the Director would like to do with the film but there will be some good scares and enough blood to keep the gorehounds happy

For your original question, Movietyme had 1 & 2 cheap a few weeks ago. Both Anchor Bay versions. I think it was �17.99 for both.

Thanks to the rest of you for your reccomendations on the other Hellraiser movies! If you haven't read the original 'Hellbound Heart' novel from Clive Barker, i reccomend it...

Which one was disowned by it's Director, by the way? Is it number 4?

probably, it was crap IMO.

5 is good and 6 (Hellseeker) is on par with the first two, its kinda like a cross between Memento and Hellseeker!

I think Hellraiser 6 deserved a cinema release, only problem is that its probably not well recieved by those looking for a typical hellraiser movie and those who may enjoy it would probably overlook it as a poor horror sequel.

I was wondering actually about the whole (as Clive Barker called it) 'Pinhead And Friends Show' as opposed to a series of stories about the Box. The idea behind Bloodline sounds interesting, showing the history of the LC box and how it was passed through the generations.

Do we ever get any more backstory on who exactly Pinhead originally was, btw? (Was he some kind of explorer/archeologist or something?)
