New buzz on the Net: a German TV channel has broadcast what is apparently a pre-US-censorship PSYCHO with Janet Leigh´s bra shot, a shot of Norman washing blood off his hands and some more stabbing of Arbogast on the stairs.

The Imdb states that the BBFC did not cut the bra shot, but initially did cut the bloody hands shot.

The R1 CE DVD seems to be post-US-censorship. Anybody checked an R2 PSYCHO DVD yet?

Hitch spoke to Truffaut re: the bra shot but not about the other stuff if I remember correctly.

All of the UK DVD releases have used the US print, which is/was more heavily censored than the original UK theatrical release. This German website has details of the uncut footage.

I think it's highly unlikely Universal will release a different cut in the UK or Europe, given their previous track record on DVD releases of Hitchcock films -- the transfer on the current DVD release of Psycho is the exact same poor quality one used for the original 1999 DVD, plus 3 of the other Universal films are still pan & scan on UK DVD.

The uncensored Psycho has also been shown on UK TV, however - possibly not in recent years but when they used to show a full-frame (open-matte) version on BBC.

Sadly, I dumped my VHS recording when I got the R1 DVD (believing the latter would be an improvement in every respect!) but other people (one of whom still has his old tape) have recently confirmed my memory is correct - at least some of the UK TV broadcasts were uncut.

Whenever I've spotted that it's on UK TV recently, I've recorded it, but certainly all of the ITV broadcasts have been the DVD version. I'll have to double-check my old VHS copy (which I think was recorded from BBC in the last 1990s) to see if that's uncut.

The Beaver has a comparison of the Criterion vs the new MGM of Rebecca here.

Quite a few of the recent Universal Hitchcock releases have been in a book style case -- you can see the US "Legacy" edition Vertigo case on DVD Beaver. The same packaging was used for the recent releases of the "Alfred Hitchcock Hour" in Germany.

I am not sure I like this Universal Legacy type case. My Psycho one keeps catching near the spine while closing the case and I have to remember to align the inner edges properly.

Has anyone here gotten those German Hitchcock Hour sets? Curious as to quality.

The new R1 SE has both bra shots and Norman Bates washing the blood off his hands. But the Arbogast stabbing scene, as far as I can recall, is the same that it has always been. It appears to be a seamless continuous take and so was probably not cut in the first place?

The new R1 "Legacy" series DVD of "Psycho" is the same censored US print that has been used on previous DVDs. The German site that was linked to previously has screengrabs of the missing footage -- in this case, Marion actually taking her bra off.

The quality is excellent...

You can find a few more random screengrabs from the 1st DVD of the 2nd set here, here and here. One of these days, I'll find time to add screengrabs for both sets to the wiki!

Some bad news about the new "Vertigo" set -- like the "Psycho" 45th anniversary set before it, Universal UK haven't bothered to use a new transfer. The transfer is the exact same one that was used on the original UK release from 2000, not the remastered version used for the recent US release. Robert Harris was critical of the original PAL DVD transfer, and it's certainly not as good as the latest transfer used for the US DVDs

The 2 disc set comes in an Amaray case with a cardboard sleeve.

Good old Universal UK giving us the shaft yet again.

BTW, much as I like those book style cases used on the R1 Legacy editions they're not the most practical. I managed to make a lovely gash in the spine of my Vertigo case today.
